Do you fancy a Tomato Soup Cake?

No, nor me!

‘The earliest recipe for tomato soup cake dates back to 1922, and some accounts say the dessert was popular among Irish immigrants in New England. The can of condensed tomato soup the recipe calls for yields a moist red-orange cake that doesn’t taste like tomatoes at all, thanks to the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg in the mix. This unusual spice cake was popular through the 1930s and 1940s, when Depression-era and wartime shortages called for culinary creativity. People sought out affordable substitutes that could stand in for pricier ingredients (such as tomatoes) without sacrificing flavor. In the 1940s, the Campbell Soup Company began experimenting with variations on the tomato soup cake recipe and, in 1960, printed a version on its tomato soup label — the first recipe to appear on a soup can.’

I don't think I'd fancy it, but when we were in France, Mr. S. had tomato ice cream and it was surprisingly delicious.

You probably wouldn't need to add sugar- the soup was very sweet. Can you still actually get it?

Not for me thanks.
To be fair I've never tasted Tomato Soup Cake but on balance I think I'd rather not try.

I saw this on Substack. Doesn't sound at all tempting.

No surprise that the manufacturers were the ones who invented it.

There used to be a recipe circulating in the 1970's for chicken with coca cola. I'd be interested to know if anyone tried it.

I've not tried the chicken recipe myself, but Diet Coke Chicken seems to be a very popular dish on social media sites! Google it...

I have cooked a gammon joint in Coca Cola ( suggested by Nigella, I think), and also in ginger ale. Both were very nice.

It sounds interesting.

I've made the Mayonnaise Chocolate Cake as seen on Blue Peter and you wouldn't have known there was a jar of mayonnaise in out.

We make/eat carrot cake, courgette cake, beetroot chocolate cake so why not?

Sorry, one eye on the Great Flood of 1607.

I made the Tomato Soup cake 30 years ago and it was a big hit! Also made the Hellman's recipes 'Midnight Madness' and 'Afternoon Delight'. In those years, best recipes were from the makers of foods, it seemed to me.
