Cheeses for Christmas, what's your favourite?

In the interests of consumer research, you understand, I have sampled this Chritsmas cheese selection from Waitrose.
I think it's good value at £9. They're all French, of course, and the lemon quince jelly is tasty too.
Ideal for anyone who wants a variety of textures and flavours in their cheeses without having to buy big hunks.
I'll be off for another pack at the weekend!

It's so good to see that most of us Grans go for British cheeses.
I love a good Cheddar, Wensleydale and Stilton.
But I must admit that Chaource, now widely available, is a great soft cheese.
I do try to shop patriotically for all food.

Black bomber cheddar, Wensleydale with cranberries or apricots, a brie, Tintern chives ( from Wales) Edam, Emmental, . We love cheese in our house

Just hard cheeses, no soft ones liked here.A mild cheddar, double Glos, Edam, Wensleydale with apricots and smoked cheddar.

A nice crunchy mature cheddar, crumbly Lancashire, or haloumi fried until crunchy like bacon and eaten on a soft white roll with salad.

I made some quince jelly a few years ago Allira three jars of beautifully clear slightly tart jelly; what an out and out faff it was, took me ages!,

I love cheese, when I was a child my Dad used to have Gorgonzola and I thought it was disgusting but now I like it. I particularly like a nice crumbly Lancashire cheese with cream crackers.

Mamardoit

I managed to get quince and pear and I'm sure it came from M&S. I've not found any other recently.

I've never made my own.

I've never made my own.
Don't even go there! 😁

I will try to get some quince jelly
I've made it years ago, delicious and sharp but when I bought a pot it was disappointingly sweet.

Can you recommend one, please, Mamardoit?

We had a large piece of Montgomery's last year RosiesMaw2 and another is arriving for this Christmas too. One of my sons friends works for the Montgomery family.
So that's the Cheddar sorted, then some Brie and St Agur (for my OH) plus whatever my son picks up on his travels.

Port Salut. And posh goats cheese from Neal's Yard 🙂

Mamardoit Tue 10-Dec-24 18:17:35

I would start with buying local so for me that would be White Stilton and Red Leicester. Then our usual, Double Gloucester and a brie. There is no need to buy French because Cricket St Thomas or similar is lovely. I would buy a couple more maybe a Wensleydale, or similar crumbly cheese. DH would want a blue cheese so that would be a Shropshire Blue or maybe more Stilton.

I will try to get some quince jelly and will serve with rich fruit cake. I've made an extra small Christmas cake to go with the cheese.

This is so interesting. 😋

Love M/S cornish cruncher.
I also discovered in Tesco, Wensleydale with blueberries and white chocolate, that will never make it to Christmas 🎅

I’ve even had a Somerset Caerphilly, I think it’s Ducketts. Neals Yard sell it and The Newt Farm shop near Bruton in Somerset.

Sacrilege!

It's like saying Cheddar doesn't come from Cheddar 😁 when we all know it does!

Somerset Brie for me and a Cheddar truckle too.

I used to love a blue Stilton but have gone off it in recent years sadly.

We have cheese and bread for Boxing Day tea.

Thank you, 25Avalon, I'll look in local farm shops too.

25Avalon Tue 10-Dec-24 16:49:38

You can get it from The Welsh Cheese Ciompany, Allira, where else?
I have also seen it sold locally in the West Country but can’t remember where - probably one of our award winning farm shops.

Allira Tue 10-Dec-24 16:44:03

I used to like Caerphilly cheese, whiter and more crumbly than Cheddar, quite tangy, but haven't seen it for a long time - what happened to it? Is it still made?

I like the English blue Stilton and Brie. Also some of the Tasmanian cheeses are lovely, Mersey valley for one.

Tasmanian cheeses are wonderful, we did a couple of cheese-tastings there, Bruny Island and Richmond I think.

I like a good cheddar but it isn't the same with gf bread or biscuits.

I bought DH a cheese advent calendar which he is enjoying.

We are not far from Long Clawson so a Stilton usually figures over Christmas and the remains end up in a sauce with a steak.

DH likes Long Clawson Stilton.

I’m very fond of farmhouse Lancashire - Singleton’s for preference - and if I’m treating myself some Caerffili from the Caws Cenarth creamery in Wales. Hartington Blue from the Peak District, a nice cave aged Roquefort and some Cornish Yarg would round my cheeseboard off nicely.

Greenfinch Tue 10-Dec-24 16:15:18

Canadian Cheddar if I can get it.

love0c Tue 10-Dec-24 16:08:08

Plain cheshire cheese for me. It is what my dear dad always liked at Christmas.
