Cheeses for Christmas, what's your favourite?

In the interests of consumer research, you understand, I have sampled this Chritsmas cheese selection from Waitrose.
I think it's good value at £9. They're all French, of course, and the lemon quince jelly is tasty too.
Ideal for anyone who wants a variety of textures and flavours in their cheeses without having to buy big hunks.
I'll be off for another pack at the weekend!

We like White Stilton- plain and without all the fancy apricots, cranberries in it. We love Brie,a good farmhouse Cheshire and of course Blue Stilton.

I quite like nettle cheese, a nice creamy white infused with nettles.

Creamy Lancashire with a lovely, rich piece of Christmas cake 😋

Seemed to be shortage of Brie here in Bristol Recently when I bought one at the back of a Aldi store shelf I realised it only had a 2 day time window so having had half will need to bin it

Noooooo don't bin it- it's fine. Bake it if you wish, on toast or on pasta or rice. Those sbd are nonsensical.

It's probably better when it's past the bb date.

I can't remember the type of cheese I bought in Waitrose a few months ago, but I think it was Port Salut. The 'best before or use by' was a bit smudged but it was definitely well out of date.
I did complain but apparently this was the date it had been packed, not a best before or use by date.

Whatever the date, it tasted fine.

Yes, out of date Brie could also be chopped up on pizza. It goes nice and runny.

Brebis a sheeps cheese from the Pyrenees
Chavroux goats cheese,
Camemberg
Port Salut

with a crusty french baguette and butter

Why bin it Gilly? Just tuck in quick. Very surprised that no one has mentioned Shropshire Blue, crumbly blue similar to a young Stilton.

AuntieE Wed 11-Dec-24 17:12:54

I have never particularly associated any one cheese with Christmas. I just buy what I usually do, Danish blue, Camenbert, Brie and one or two good strong Danish cheeses for slicing.

Fleurpepper Wed 11-Dec-24 16:55:19

Stilton first, black bomber, a good cheddar, brie, Morbier, Comté and Gruyère and Caprice des Dieux.

Millers Damsel charcoal wafers are good too.

Always water biscuits for me too but I like Lancashire with Nairns Super seeded oatcakes. They seem to bring out the flavour somehow.

Maxifly1 Wed 11-Dec-24 16:08:40

Tasty Lancashire. Isle of mull unpasteurised cheddar. Manche go. Compte. And a quality artisan wensleydale. I like morris ons melba thins and water biscuits with mine, plus butter of course!

EEJit Wed 11-Dec-24 15:28:52

A nice simple extra mature Cheddar or a decent Cheshire is enough for me.

oldeman Wed 11-Dec-24 14:31:46

It has to be Stilton but I also love Wensleydale, Cheshire and Cheddar. They make great cheeses in the UK now. No need to go French for something special. Whatever cheeses you choose I hope that you all have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

escaped that looks like a really lovely mix and seems like good value too. If we had a Waitrose near us and didn't have a cheese order on the way I'd be tempted to go for that pack.

Sago Our order from the Courtyard Dairy arrives next week.

We found out about them because DD2 had been there a few times as she used to pass it on her way back from Cumbria in her last job.

I can't remember all that's arriving as we share it with DD2 so it's largish order but I know we have some Baron Bigod and a couple of blues plus some hard cheese.

We had a day out at the Courtyard Dairy in the summer and it was really lovely. We had to buy some nice wine from the shop in the complex to go with the cheese we'd bought :-)

As for chutney, DD1 makes some good one, this year we have Crab Apple Butter a Courgette Chutney and I think an Onion Jam from her in our Christmas stocking so looking forward to the cheese and bits.

So that bit of Christmas is sorted, not a lot else is sorted but cheese, chutneys and biscuits are organised.

Ktsmum Wed 11-Dec-24 13:43:07

Wensleydale and cranberry all the eay!😋

NemosMum Wed 11-Dec-24 13:42:47

Great to read other people's favourites. Just been won over by Northampton Blue and Northumberland Darling Blue (not expensive). Also like Parlick Fell sheep's cheese.

GrauntyHelen Wed 11-Dec-24 12:22:23

Goats cheese Wensleydale with cranberries and baked camembert

Cheese for me has the moorish factor of chocolate, the latter is rarely in the house, but we are never without cheese. For Christmas I like my favourite cheeses which include, Stilton, Brie, Cambozola Manchego and Comte. Any of those would do. We always have a strong Cheddar in the fridge, generally some Brie and Double Gloucester, I've developed a taste for DG of late, and a hard Italian cheese, such as Pecorino for grating on pasta dishes. My granddaugher only likes her gluten free pasta with just grated cheese of that nature, nothing else, so always have both of those in the house ready for her visits.

Oh one of my favourite subjects!

Sadly one of my favourite ever cheese Richard 111 Wensleydale is no longer made so I will start with a Kit Calvert Wensleydale, Snowdonia Black Bomber, Tunworth, Singletons Lancashire, strong Cornish Cheddar, Orkney Smoked Cheddar, Blacksticks Blue and finally just one French cheese Epoisses or if not available Delice de Bourgogne.

I could go on!

I love Fortnums chutney and usually get some in my Xmas stocking otherwise any nice dark chutney will do.

Carr’s biscuits always and some quality grapes, little sticks of celery or British pears in season.

I would purchase all the cheese from the Courtyard Dairy at Settle, they arrive in beautiful condition, even better if you live close enough to call in you can sample all their wonderful cheeses!

My DP got snowdonia black bomber for

Esmay Wed 11-Dec-24 06:12:55

I love all cheeses , but my favourite is a white crumbly Cheshire .

I made some quince jelly a few years ago Allira three jars of beautifully clear slightly tart jelly; what an out and out faff it was, took me ages!,

I made the mistake of starting to make it when I needed to be somewhere in the afternoon. The quinces were from MIL's garden.

That must have been 45 years ago, never made any since.
