Once the cheap'n'filling affordable food of the working class, the price has escalated out of all proportion.

And however much fish and chip shop owners wring their hands and claim it's beyond their control I'm afraid it looks like they'll have to go the way of the pubs - right out of business.

Went in Weatherspoons and had delicious Fish and Chips, including a pint !!! grand sum of £7 , it was lovely, cheaper than eating in .

Local ones in our area are between £10 + £15. Although they don't all specify if it is Cod .

We have several fish and chips near us, but our preferred shop charges £11:40 for a large fish supper ( which fish and chips is known as it Scotland). The food is made to order and has never let us down.

My Rock Eel and chips in Hertfordshire is just over £10. It's such a big portion it does two meals so I think it's good value.

Gave up on fish and chips after trying most of the local chippys and got so fed up of soggy batter and non fresh fish. Now only ever have them if go back up to the Yorkshire coast or a very good place about an hour's drive away. Such a shame as do love them as a treat.

I’m getting hungry reading all this and I have left overs that must be eaten tonight… really aching for fish and chips now!
Grrr
!
( South Wales here where good fish and chips runs into about £9- £12 …depending on which chippy I go to)

My local chippy does what they call a light bite for £6.90. You get what I call a regular sized fish, chips which are usually too much for me and your choice of mushy peas or curry sauce. I went to visit my Mum and got a regular fish and chips from her local place to share as she doesn’t eat much which cost me £10.

At my local chippie the portions are huge, normal cod and chips at £12.30 is plenty for 2 people. They also do a small cod and chips for £9.70 and an OAP cod and chips for £8.80 which is still huge and too much for one person. It's a shame they don't make them a bit smaller and cheaper.

Considering I've just had a sandwich and a pot of tea at a cafe in the Lake District for £18, I don't think it's only the fish & chips that are highly priced now 🤔

You'd think it would be cheaper in Devon, 🌊 , but our prices are on a par with Shinamae's.
£11.75 for haddock and chips.

£ 15+ at Darts Farm but beautifully cooked and a large piece of fish too. Go to Greendale on the F&C special offer day and you can get is for around £10 but most places are around £12-£15 now.

I live in Luxembourg. Known for being expensive
Small 100g €13 = £11.30
Large 200g €20 = €17.40

It is a food truck.

I don’t eat cod but love battered haddock and it’s a treat for me to buy fish and chips in Scotland where haddock is the norm and you have to ask if you want cod!
Fish and chips is still cheap compared to other take away options. I don’t remember it ever being cheap. As kids, we only got fish as a v special treat. We had just a bag of chips, possibly a battered sausage or a potato scallop (thick slice of potato dipped in batter for the uninitiated).
Sea fishing is still a difficult and dangerous job and many species are overfished. Fish shouldn’t be a cheap option and even buying and prepping it at home is not a cheap meal.

£5 each. 😎

Our chippy serves large portions so we buy a large fish, a portion of chips and a large pot of mushy peas between the two of us. £6 for fish, £2.70 chips, £1.40 peas, so just over

As a student my first memory of Fish and Chips was ordering
“fish and 6” which was Cod at 1/- and 6d chips that would be around 1965, in new money that’s 7 1/2 pence. I was earning £5 a week then it seemed cheap at the time.

If a student could earn £10 an hour and Fish and Chips was £11 it’s twice as expensive now

We have them about once a month - absolutely delicious from our local chippy (,Gloucester). £11 for a huge portion so we share one between us

An occasional meal for us if we've been busy on a Friday.

Two cod, one chips, one mushy peas was £18 last time.

I just had a cod and chips when I went to lunch with a friend on Thursday. Equivalent to 10.50 GBP. Just one piece of fish, but it was quite large. Served with a small side of coleslaw, and a wedge of lemon, which is the norm here.

This was the first time I saw vinegar in a spray bottle! Regular and malt vinegar in a small spray, which I quite liked!

One of our local shops does pensioners special of cod, chips, dessert, tea or coffee for £9.99. It’s very good.

As a veggie I eat battered halloumi with chips when eating out for a treat. Cheaper than fish.

Norah Sun 13-Apr-25 20:26:23

Agree OP.

£12 - £15 is more than I'd want to pay for fish and potatoes.

Harris27 Sun 13-Apr-25 20:26:00

Went out yesterday to local upmarket fish and chip restaurant. Haddock and chips£17 mushy peas extra £2.45. The chippy underneath ( sane company) was charging £11 for fish and chips.

Deedaa Sun 13-Apr-25 20:16:57

Does anyone remember the way prices exploded in the 70s when there was the potato shortage. There was all the fish you could eat but chips were astronomical. Fish and Chips is a rare treat for us now. I tend to eat it more often in a restaurant where at least I'm getting a plate and cutlery, and someone else is washing up, which makes the price seem worth it.

Can’t remember the last time I had it, but here’s our local price list in one of our chip shops in North Devon

That menu sounds really nice!

Standard cod and chips in my local in Bristol is just under £12.

I came across an old paper clipping on Facebook a couple of days ago for the prices of fish and chips at a local chippy.
It used to be 21p for fish & chips . Now it's £18.95 shock

I haven't been to the chippy for many years, I prefer to make my own .
