Fish & Chips: £12 - £15!

Once the cheap'n'filling affordable food of the working class, the price has escalated out of all proportion.

And however much fish and chip shop owners wring their hands and claim it's beyond their control I'm afraid it looks like they'll have to go the way of the pubs - right out of business.

Haven’t bought from a chippy for ages. We enjoy a frozen beer battered fish ( Sainsbury’s do a decent one) and a sweet potato cut up into chunks and drizzled with olive oil and both put into the Ninja. Quick, easy, tasty and healthier.

Where on earth do you live ? our chippy is about half that price for fish and chips

Allsorts Sun 13-Apr-25 06:21:32

It is £12 here.

M0nica Sun 13-Apr-25 06:45:35

Just checked, ours is £9.90.

Fish and chips isn't meant to be healthy. Sainsburies fish and sweet potatoes et, cooked at homes is a completely different meal. Like comparing a curry with a roast dinner

£11.95 here near me. (Durham)
I don’t think the ‘famous, well established’ ones will go out of business. There’s always a queue and a long wait at mine.

It’s a treat now, anyway.

We don’t have fish and chips very often, I don’t like them.

I went out to lunch with some girlfriends the other day, so DH had some for his tea,

Haddock, £6.20, chips £2.80 and a large mushy peas (yuk) £1.95, total £10.95.

Collected by us, took our own bag, bags extra.

We use our local, excellent, chip shop now and again. Portions are generous. Sharing a delicious large cod (it’s huge) with standard chips the bill is just under £12. Always chips over.

Fish and chips in our sea front town seem much more expensive. A takeaway starts at £9 per person for a much smaller portion. Upwards of £13 to eat in.

We have them about once a month - absolutely delicious from our local chippy (,Gloucester). £11 for a huge portion so we share one between us

We bought for 5 last night and had them delivered -£45.00. Not bad on a per person basis but we won't be doing that very often.

I’m in London and fish and chips at my local chip shop is Cod £10.40 chips £3.75 it’s delicious but very expensive. I’ve tried several different finest battered Cod but it’s never as good or nearly as large I only treat myself occasionally.

karmalady Sun 13-Apr-25 07:45:26

Not expensive if nicely cooked. It is a full meal

Last I had was 6 years ago when I was in the throes of moving.

Our local chippy is £10.95 for a fish supper two pieces of fish..haddock…and a decent amount of chips.

I’m in central Scotland.

There are a few chippys near me (East Surrey).
The best one charges £9 for a medium cod with a lemon wedge. I don't ask for chips because there are far too many for me.
I don't go often at that price but when I do it is always busy with customers and the ubiquitous delivery lads.
I have tried supermarket battered fish but those from a chippy have a better taste.

Regular Cod and chips are around £12, large £15. We have two very good chippies here but don't use them very often these days.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 13-Apr-25 08:58:08

We have a great chippy downstairs opposite Sainsbury’s. Generous portions so we share. £9 for fish with small chips. If I come home and get in one of the lifts and can smell someone’s been for them, I always fancy some!

Same if I ever smell fried onions, mmn! 😁

My fish & chips the other night was £6.90 but the fish has shrunk in size, decent portion of chips- very tasty.
Yes been to other places where it is quite an expensive meal & not always that good.

Don’t they do a pensioner’s size fish & chips- maybe ask for a very small portion of chips.

Our local ones are thriving, it’s about £13 for the two of us, cod, chips and mushy peas for me (sorry Calendargirl)
Our two village pubs are also alive and well mae13 as are the sister pubs to the one I’ve been using for nearly 40 years, it’s diversified to survive. Bingo nights, weekly quiz, football, pool and golf teams/events with coffee and cake during the day, it’s a community asset.
Not all doom and gloom

Is a single fish two fish there? Last time I was in Glasgow I asked for a single supper & I got two large fish. Really good chippys up the road 😊 I think that was called the blue lagoon.

We were in Paisley (quite nice area) last weekend looking for supper a couple of Restaurants were fully booked, so opted for Fish and Chips it was a good portion and good quality, over £11, the days of cheap food are receding quickly.

Shinamae Sun 13-Apr-25 09:16:50

Can’t remember the last time I had it, but here’s our local price list in one of our chip shops in North Devon

Shinamae Sun 13-Apr-25 09:17:32

Looks like images are being vetted…

Remember they stopped posting images at all for a few weeks because of something that had happened on Mum’s net
Now, when I put a post up, it says image coming soon, so they’re obviously being looked at which is fair enough
