Not expensive if nicely cooked. It is a full meal

Last I had was 6 years ago when I was in the throes of moving.

I’m in London and fish and chips at my local chip shop is Cod £10.40 chips £3.75 it’s delicious but very expensive. I’ve tried several different finest battered Cod but it’s never as good or nearly as large I only treat myself occasionally.

We bought for 5 last night and had them delivered -£45.00. Not bad on a per person basis but we won't be doing that very often.

We have them about once a month - absolutely delicious from our local chippy (,Gloucester). £11 for a huge portion so we share one between us

We use our local, excellent, chip shop now and again. Portions are generous. Sharing a delicious large cod (it’s huge) with standard chips the bill is just under £12. Always chips over.

Fish and chips in our sea front town seem much more expensive. A takeaway starts at £9 per person for a much smaller portion. Upwards of £13 to eat in.

We don’t have fish and chips very often, I don’t like them.

I went out to lunch with some girlfriends the other day, so DH had some for his tea,

Haddock, £6.20, chips £2.80 and a large mushy peas (yuk) £1.95, total £10.95.

Collected by us, took our own bag, bags extra.

£11.95 here near me. (Durham)
I don’t think the ‘famous, well established’ ones will go out of business. There’s always a queue and a long wait at mine.

It’s a treat now, anyway.

Just checked, ours is £9.90.

Fish and chips isn't meant to be healthy. Sainsburies fish and sweet potatoes et, cooked at homes is a completely different meal. Like comparing a curry with a roast dinner

Allsorts Sun 13-Apr-25 06:21:32

It is £12 here.

Where on earth do you live ? our chippy is about half that price for fish and chips

Lovetopaint037 Sun 13-Apr-25 04:52:06

Haven’t bought from a chippy for ages. We enjoy a frozen beer battered fish ( Sainsbury’s do a decent one) and a sweet potato cut up into chunks and drizzled with olive oil and both put into the Ninja. Quick, easy, tasty and healthier.

Once the cheap'n'filling affordable food of the working class, the price has escalated out of all proportion.

And however much fish and chip shop owners wring their hands and claim it's beyond their control I'm afraid it looks like they'll have to go the way of the pubs - right out of business.
