Once the cheap'n'filling affordable food of the working class, the price has escalated out of all proportion.

And however much fish and chip shop owners wring their hands and claim it's beyond their control I'm afraid it looks like they'll have to go the way of the pubs - right out of business.

Local Mr Chippy south coast - Senior Citizen cod and chips £6.30.

Ours costs $24 for a large piece of flake and chips, about £11.50 so similar. Enough chips for 2 . I think our wages are a bit higher, though. Everything is expensive now except the dreaded maccas which is probably the cheapest.

last night small haddock and chips for 4 plus one portion of mushy peas, cost £46 at our local chippy. However we have enough chips left to go with our steak pie this evening.

We have a great chippy downstairs opposite Sainsbury’s. Generous portions so we share. £9 for fish with small chips. If I come home and get in one of the lifts and can smell someone’s been for them, I always fancy some!

Same if I ever smell fried onions, mmn! 😁

My late aunt worked in a cafe some years ago in a busy area of Falkirk. When it went quiet her boss would ask her to fry up some onions. The smell always brought in a steady stream of customers. 😉

We're lucky here that fish and chips is only £6.50, it's always well cooked and they're both very tasty, sadly the shop is up for sale, but a lot of shop owners are becoming incredibly greedy, there's no way I'd pay more than £7.50 for one portion without anything else like peas etc.!

In the Madrid Capital, since 1860 there is a centinnel bar called LABRIA which is well known for its Fresh battered Cod Fish which is simply divinely delicious.

With a glass of wine or a beer it is approx. 14 € ..

Then there is The James Joyce Pub (Irish owned) which has Fish and chips on their lunch carte as a main entree.

I sometimes prepared battered fish, British style at home.

I recall it to be absolutely scrumputous ..

Sorry Daisy, looks like I've quoted the wrong post.

Hi
Everything has gone up from the cooking fat,the fuel ,the wages, the rent You name it 😢

Yes, I do. 6 penn'orth was the norm for many years. Fish and chips were 1/3d. I think the price of chips only rose during the potato shortage in the 70s, and never came back down.

No longer an affordable chippy tea here, £10.50 for cod and £4.50!! for chips in our local - Herefordshire

Menopauselbitch Tue 15-Apr-25 09:11:30

Yet people are more than happy to pay £20 for a pizza that cost on average £2.50 to make. Unbelievable.

As folk who've read through the comments will have realised, there are huge regional differences in F&C pricing, it's not just the massively higher prices of the ingredients that are at fault! [Thinks rents and business rates . . .]

The OP's phrase "And however much fish and chip shop owners wring their hands" is, sadly, delusional, why would those shop owners make such drastic increases and instantly reduce their customer base if they didn't have to? Have you tried running a business? No, thought not.

Oh, and did someone say making those meals yourself (or from a s'market) would be cheaper and healthier? Well, yes, but the SAME APPLIES to Indian & Chinese (s'market versions are fine these days) and most certainly to Pizza, ridiculously expensive from a takeaway, given that the box costs more than the ingredients -- and from some well-known chains, tastes slightly better!

We're lucky enough to have a fish van calling to our door every week. We're in North Notts and the fish comes from Grimsby. It's not cheap - buying meat would be cheaper actually - but it's always absolutely fresh and top quality. I think fish and chips from the chippy has gone up because fresh fish is now quite pricey. I don't like chips much except when we are down in Sidmouth and one particular cafe serves perfect ones.

Flutterby345 Mon 14-Apr-25 19:19:55

North London £16, just looked up our nearest.

Lemonred Mon 14-Apr-25 18:35:14

We are in the Midlands, and pay £12 for a large cod, and small chips. (The chips are actually a good plateful! So we share.)
And this price is delivered to our door. There are cheaper shops, but we choose a prizewinning restaurant. We only treat ourselves a few times a year though.
However, Tesco do 4 battered cod fillets for about a fiver, and they are lovely. Proper fillets of fish, not mushed flakes like some. DH has a few oven chips, and I have homemade coleslaw/salad.

Every Friday night I used to be sent to the chippy for fish and chips for four, and extra chips to be divided among five of us. I usually met many of my classmates who had been sent on the same errand! I’m guessing there are few families nowadays who would buy that amount. I remember the chips were either 4d or 6d per portion, and I think fish&chips may have been 1/3d!

Two portions of "senior" fish and chips at our local chippy are £14. They are enough portion wise.

But fish and chips now in some pubs near us are £19.95 per person.

Pub meals now are for high days and holidays. Or if they are running a special offer.

I now buy cod fillet and dust in flour, egg and proper breadcrumbs - delicious served with air fryer chips. Don't want to get the chip pan back out too messy.

It's very expensive locally too (greater London) and even more so in the local pubs, though delicious. Portions aren't so generous as they used to be either - probably better for our waistlines though!
I also generally cook our own in the air fryer now, some of the frozen fillets in batter are a bit mean, I prefer to choose from the fresh fish in batter in M&S and Waitrose.

I can get a small fish and chips in the nearby village at lunchtime for £6.50 I think but a full size fish with half portion of chips - still more than I need - costs £9.80 at my local chippy. I often get chicken and chips instead as it is much cheaper but depends if I'm feeling extravagant!

REWIRING Mon 14-Apr-25 17:21:22

Fish and chips a treat now for us and my grandchildren these days

Nannyof4mummyof2 Mon 14-Apr-25 17:17:35

In our local chippy it's 7.50 fab fish and great size for OAP

Anyone else remember asking for six penn'rth (no idea how to spell that) of chips as a kid?

Juniewoonie Mon 14-Apr-25 16:17:53

On the south coast, seaside location. I had fish and chips on Friday £17! The chips were £4.15 (for a small portion) and the cod was £12.45! Not a cheap meal now, although it was absolutely delicious.
