How posh is your supermarket?

I was in my local (MK) M&S this morning and picked up some bits from the Deli aisle. In Waitrose website the same bits are referred to as “Party Food” or “sharing plates”
How much more down to earth ((and to the point) to see in huge letters above the same items in M&S Food in Moseley
PICKY BITS 🤣🤣🤣

Got to love PICKY BITS - so much more appealing!

Oh we do love some 'picky bits' in this house!

Grannybags Fri 04-Jul-25 17:49:04

Oh yes, picky bits every time!

Grammaretto Fri 04-Jul-25 17:59:50

🤣😂😅

Thanks to our family party girl, DGD1, we’ve been calling them Picky Bits for ages.
Where she goes, we follow! 🥳

I have called them picky bits for yonks though I don’t know how I picked it up.
I saw the sign in M&S at Handforth Dean last week and was delighted.
I bought chilli cheese sticks wrapped in chorizo, prawns with sun-dried tomatoes in basil and mozzarella balls in pesto.
3 For £8, all absolutely delicious.

Sorry but I won't be buying anything labelled "picky bits". I think it's a revolting phrase and +++++++ YEUK WARNING ++++++ I can't stop myself from thinking of scabs snd noses.

I think M&S have just picked up on the current fashion for calling deli items picky bits. The term has been around for quite some time but it is now trending probably due to social media. 🤔

We've said 'picky bits' forever. My children used to ask for a 'picky tea' when they were young.

Agree entirely with Scribbles. Sounds most unappealing.

You'd hate the book I just bought for my grandson then - it's called Bogeys!

My local supermarket is Waitrose and the type that shop in there think that they're very posh!
I on the other hand, I pop in to the nearby Heron foods and grab a bargain for a fraction of the price. Yeah me! 😊

I don't warm to the phrase "picky bits" either it sounds a bit gentile and twee to me.

I remember buying 'Bogeys' (the book not the stuff from up your nose) for one of my GCs.

Never heard of “pick bits” , I understand deli, wine, fruit, meat, cereals. Then every few weeks it gets swapped round to make shopping more difficult. I’ve got used to Waitrose can’t be bothered learning another supermarkets silly pricing system.

JamesandJon33 Fri 04-Jul-25 19:53:54

We don’t have posh supermarkets here. Waitrose stops at Cardiff. ‘picky bits’ they’d laugh in your face here.

We don't think we're posh, we just are!
😂😂😂

But not so posh when we go into Lidl beforehand!

Allira Fri 04-Jul-25 19:56:54

What are picky bits/deli items/party foods called in Lidl and Aldi?

Allira Fri 04-Jul-25 19:58:25

Party food and cocktails.

Georgesgran Fri 04-Jul-25 19:58:42

Picky tea - a favourite here. Doesn’t matter from which supermarket though, we’ve done it for years.
Even the 🎄Eve buffet is known as picky bits,

Well, I shop in Wautrose and I don't think I'm very posh. I am ne - quite ordinary really.

And DGS3 worked for Heron foods as a Saturdag job a year or so ago. He forwarded the emails sent to him by the store manager. They were bullying and aggressive. So yes 'Yeah you'.

midgey Fri 04-Jul-25 20:04:41

Picky tea has always been known in our family as a Surprise on a Plate!…..

Blossoming Fri 04-Jul-25 20:04:47

Our nearest supermarket is Morrisons, so probably not posh at all. When I was a child we always had what we called a picky tea on Boxing Day, but wouldn’t expect to see food labelled picky bits in a food shop.

Witzend Mon 07-Jul-25 13:33:08

Now I come to think of it, we’d call them ‘nibbles’.

As for ‘posh’ supermarkets, I use both Asda and Waitrose!

nanna8 Mon 07-Jul-25 13:40:21

They’re just called delis here. Dips and sharing platters mostly. I wouldn’t buy anything called picky bits, sounds like something from nostrils. Yuck.
