With the summer holidays coming up and a dgd who’s keen to cook I’ve been sorting out recipes, including ones that don’t involve putting the oven on for when it’s hot. She’s keen to try making marshmallows but there seem to be a variety of recipes on Google, many involving corn syrup and jam thermometers.

Does anyone have a tried and tested, simple recipe please?

Sorry I dont, BUT…..have you ever put a Marshmallow in the microwave……it needs watching closely to stop it as the Marshmallow gets ginormous!! Hope you get more sensible answers soon!

I shall definitely keep that in mind Katycrunch!

My kids used to love putting a marshmallow on a digestive biscuit, putting both in the microwave, watching the marshmallow grow and then putting another digestive on the top and eat the resulting sandwich.

That sounds like something my dgd would like to try.

Honestly putting marshmallows in the microwave is brilliant, years ago I (or rather my 8 year old son) won a school science competition for doing that and explaining the results. I was so proud grin

It is possible to buy vegetarian glycerin ……I buy it in a 1 litre container to make cleaning products from that online place that begins with ‘A’ .

That clip is 11 years old and the website mentioned is no longer online, but the recipe should still be good!

Looks like you can't avoid the syrup, but she does say it's available in supermarkets. And if you're working with sugar, a thermometer is essential. Reading the thermometer is part of the learning process. You don't say how old she is but any child old enough to help in the kitchen is probably old enough to read numbers.
