Can anyone recommend frozen chips that are crispy on the outside and do not taste of reconstituted potato inside, please?

The only frozen chips I like are
Albert Bartlett Crispy Fries.
They are delicious.

Frozen oven chips were tested a few weeks ago in the Guardian.
Morrison's triple cooked skin on chips ( cooked in beef fat) were judged the best.

Sorry, but none are as good as my own oven cooked chips - which are hardly more difficult than frozen.

Will try that kittylester. I guess you coat all sides with oil?

Koffmann’s Classic French Fries are lovely.

for frozen chips ,I like Birds eye crispy, but I still prefer home made chips i a chip pan.

I parboil chunky chips, heat butter and olive oil, drain the chips in a colander, place colander over the empty boiling pan, pour the fat over the potatoes, turn the potatoes in the fat in the pan and oven cook for 20- 25 mins.

I was a chip pan fan until I tried this method.

There's a bit more to that than chucking some frozen chips into an air fryer for 10 minutes though!

I quite like Aldi's sweet potato chips done in the air fryer. I try to kid myself that they are healthy!

I only like McCains fries, as long as they’re not overcooked, they need watching.

Another one for Albert Bartlett, and Tom Kerridge triple cooked chips from M&S are very tasty but expensive.

I realise that my recipe seems more complicated but, really, once you've done it a couple of times it's a doddle.

Claretjan Wed 20-Aug-25 21:20:32

I really miss my mum's chips, and I don't think you can beat traditional chips, but I think Alfred Bartlett are the best of the frozen ones. Kittylester yours sound good so I might make the effort!

Claretjan Wed 20-Aug-25 21:23:18

Albert not Alfred!

I used to like aunt Bessie's but can't find them any more.
I have had A. Bartlett chips but as we don't eat chips very often I had forgotten them. Will look for them and note the other suggestions. Thanks everyone.

I just chop potatoes into chunky chips, skin on, spray with oil, onto an oven try and cook about 180 until done. Sometimes I’ll dust with paprika/finely chopped herbs/garlic salt or other flavourings.

I like McCain triple cooked Gastro chips.

Shill29 Thu 21-Aug-25 14:07:27

Asda home style are good. Morrisons home style are second best!

Blossoming Thu 21-Aug-25 14:29:10

Home made chips are wonderful. For those of us unable to peel and chop potatoes frozen chips are a godsend.

Ziplok Thu 21-Aug-25 14:46:00

I like the McCain chunky crinkle chips. Crispy on outside, fluffy within.
I don’t, however, like their straight cut ones, I found those to be greasy and soggy. They just wouldn’t crisp up like the crinkle ones do, so had to throw away half a pack, as, after 2 attempts, the result was the same.

Ziplok Thu 21-Aug-25 14:47:44

Forgot to say, both kinds are oven chips, not chips for putting in a deep fat fryer.

silverlining48 Thu 21-Aug-25 14:53:02

Crinkle chips hold a lot more fat than straight so I avoid. Straight chunky ones made fresh from real potatoes, skin on, one spray in oven or air fryer, once in a while is a treat.

silverlining48 Thu 21-Aug-25 14:55:44

So easy and quick to do it yourself at least you know nothing added that you have never heard of. They certainly don’t taste of reconstituted ingredients.

kittylester Thu 21-Aug-25 15:05:15

The reason I started making my own was the difficulty in finding frozen chips without gluten in the coating. That is much better now.
