Tinned soup or a jam and cream doughnut?

My soup cupboard is bare. I am disappointed by the lack of variety these days but decided to get a tin of healthy tomato soup for my lunch, while sorely tempted by the jam and cream doughnuts I passed (in Aldi).

However, when I spotted that the total sugar (natural occuring and added) in half a can of the tomato soup was more than that in one of the doughnuts, my resolve crumbled. Afraid to say, it was the doughnuts which came home with me!

I noticed that our big Tescos has a huge selection of soups from basic to fancy. They aren’t the cheapest place though but other supermarkets seem to have slimmed down the selections. Though I do like a homemade soup, the nicest tinned one lately was an M&S cream of mushroom.
I’d have gone for soup first then cream doughnut for after😋

I used to love condensed tomato soup when I was young. I haven’t had it for a long time, though. I don’t buy donuts but I do like pizzas which are likely worse. Our local pizza shop sells both , even sweet pizzas ( lemon and apple) .

Honestly, I don’t blame you at all 😄 If the “healthy” soup has more sugar than a doughnut, the doughnuts win every time. At least they taste like a treat! 🍩

Unless you're consuming large quantities of sugar every day, or you are diabetic, I don't see why you couldn't have the soup and the doughnut. I would!

Neither. I batch cook soup and freeze. Doughnuts are UPF and play havoc with the digestive system.

If you want the full sugar rush.

Go for both

Enjoy!

Try M n S pea and mint soup. Absolutely gorgeous.

ingredients

Water, Petits Pois (peas), Double Cream (Milk), Crème Fraîche (Milk), Cornflour, Spinach, Mint, Onions, and a Vegetable Stock (made with carrots, mushrooms, onions, salt, pepper), seasoned with salt and coarse black pepper, with Milk

No nasties or e numbers. If I come in tired, cold and hungry its perfect.

I always make, and always have made, my own soup..cannot stand gloopy tinned soup. Always make my own raspberry jam and lemon curd.

Heinz Tomato Soup is my go-to comfort food but I haven't had any this winter.

As for doughnuts- you can keep them...horrible things.

Few of my homemade soups follow recipes, and I’m increasingly disappointed with the ones I buy, but as there’s no way I’d make it just for myself I treasure B****sters Cullen Skink. Takes me back to such happy times, and tastes lovely too!

I make soup regularly.
The easypeasy sort..
Usually it’s a carrot, onion, tomato base.
If I’ve got any veg in the fridge or leftovers from the previous night I add them.
Tin of tomatoes, tomato purée, veg stock cube.
Water
Any herbs to spice things up. (Chilli flakes works for us,)
Boil for 45 minutes or so.
Liquidise it with my hand blnder.
Bob’s your uncle.

Also while we are on the subject of soups….does anyone remember Heinz cheese and onion soup back in the seventies! Used to love that!

Nannyflea Sat 13-Dec-25 18:13:38

I would defo have the soup and the doughnut! Both Tom soup and doughnuts me favourite!🤓

I have a really simple tomato soup recipe for a soup maker but it's just as easy in a pan on the stove:
Tomato soup
2 tins chopped toms
1 tin baked beans
1 pickled onion
1 oxo cube
put all in soup maker, select smooth.

For a comfort occasion - which I thought this was - I’d go for Campbell’s condensed tomato soup poured over mashed potatoes. We don’t have to be saintly all the time

I make leek and potato soup. Saute leeks in a little butter, add veg broth , diced potatoes, a little seasoning and simmer til cooked. Use a stick blender and leave quite chunky. Add some cream cheese to serve. Yummy!

Aely Great choice!

There used to be Granny,s soup on supermarket shelves the lentil and scotch broth tasted almost the same as home made .
Ihaven,t bought tinned soup for decades so don’t know if it’s till around.Worth trying if you see it.

Life gets more difficult. I’m happy to make home cooked soup even including the time to wash everything including my hands (remember the threads about saving water) and peeled/scrubbed and chopped, then popped into the soup maker, I’m happy to sit down with a mug of Heinz Tomato soup (has to be Heinz) while the machine does it’s job.
If I’ve learnt one thing from this thread, it’s how much sugar there is in all the vegetables I use to make soup.
I’m now looking for a recipe for spinach and potato soup. Even watercress soup recipes require the addition of sugar laden veg.

Esmay

I love cream of tomato soup with grated cheese on top and a hunk of crusty white bread

Me too!!

Crosse & Blackwell soups are much better than Heinz. Usually cheaper too.

Robin202 Sat 13-Dec-25 14:16:48

No to both. Just look at the ingredients on the back of the tin/packet - if it has more than 5 ingredients, don’t go there. Supermarket bakery products are full of nasties.

Homemade soup cant be beaten in my opinion. Batch make and freeze.

You used to be able to buy "Amy's" organic tinned tomato soup which was delicious, I can't seem to find it now. There is a good M&S Chunky Mexican-Style Chilli & Bean Soup which isn't expensive, is filling and not too calorific.

I find iced doughnuts too sweet, so would pass on both!
I make any number of soups - tomato, sweetcorn, squash, minestrone, parsnip…. It really doesn’t take much effort or time and is so much healthier.
There is enough for several meals, so I put hem in plastic containers in the fridge and microwave them when needed.

Don't go shopping if hungry!

I would buy the doughnut too.
