Tinned soup or a jam and cream doughnut?

My soup cupboard is bare. I am disappointed by the lack of variety these days but decided to get a tin of healthy tomato soup for my lunch, while sorely tempted by the jam and cream doughnuts I passed (in Aldi).

However, when I spotted that the total sugar (natural occuring and added) in half a can of the tomato soup was more than that in one of the doughnuts, my resolve crumbled. Afraid to say, it was the doughnuts which came home with me!

Making your own soup is very easy and you don’t add sugar or other c..p to it. Healthy and cheaper option.

I think tinned tomato soup is very high in sugar! Maybe other tinned soup would be less

Tinned tomato soup is one of the worst for high sugar content. You need to scrutinise the labels. Vegetable, mushroom, and minestrone seem to be ok plus I usually water the minestrone down which lowers the sugar rate. I always make my own when we have a chicken and freeze some of it.

Ps what a great excuse to have a jam and cream doughnut.

The doughnut, but no cream thanks - just the jam. (Yes, I know I’m weird…)

I have cream of tomato soup (has to be Heinz) for a treat every now and then. It has abou 9.5 g sugar per half can.
My home made (Pinch of Yum recipe) tomato soup doesn’t have any less sugar, though I don’t actually add sugar.

You could buy a can of chopped tomatoes (no added sugar) cut up an onion and make your own tom soup.

I made onion soup tonight, with a floaty melted cheese toast on top. delicious and healthy.

No not weird! That would be my choice 😋

I do make my own soup when I have a chicken carcass or have made a beef stew with extra vegetables, but a tin or two in the cupboard is ideal when a quick, warming lunch is required.

I love cream of tomato soup with grated cheese on top and a hunk of crusty white bread

I would have taken the doughnut. Not keen on tinned soup so keep home made soup in the freezer.

Don't go shopping if hungry!

I would buy the doughnut too.

I find iced doughnuts too sweet, so would pass on both!
I make any number of soups - tomato, sweetcorn, squash, minestrone, parsnip…. It really doesn’t take much effort or time and is so much healthier.
There is enough for several meals, so I put hem in plastic containers in the fridge and microwave them when needed.

You used to be able to buy "Amy's" organic tinned tomato soup which was delicious, I can't seem to find it now. There is a good M&S Chunky Mexican-Style Chilli & Bean Soup which isn't expensive, is filling and not too calorific.

No to both. Just look at the ingredients on the back of the tin/packet - if it has more than 5 ingredients, don’t go there. Supermarket bakery products are full of nasties.

Homemade soup cant be beaten in my opinion. Batch make and freeze.

Crosse & Blackwell soups are much better than Heinz. Usually cheaper too.

Life gets more difficult. I’m happy to make home cooked soup even including the time to wash everything including my hands (remember the threads about saving water) and peeled/scrubbed and chopped, then popped into the soup maker, I’m happy to sit down with a mug of Heinz Tomato soup (has to be Heinz) while the machine does it’s job.
If I’ve learnt one thing from this thread, it’s how much sugar there is in all the vegetables I use to make soup.
I’m now looking for a recipe for spinach and potato soup. Even watercress soup recipes require the addition of sugar laden veg.

There used to be Granny,s soup on supermarket shelves the lentil and scotch broth tasted almost the same as home made .
Ihaven,t bought tinned soup for decades so don’t know if it’s till around.Worth trying if you see it.

Aely Great choice!

I make leek and potato soup. Saute leeks in a little butter, add veg broth , diced potatoes, a little seasoning and simmer til cooked. Use a stick blender and leave quite chunky. Add some cream cheese to serve. Yummy!

For a comfort occasion - which I thought this was - I’d go for Campbell’s condensed tomato soup poured over mashed potatoes. We don’t have to be saintly all the time
