Hello! What do you think?
Just found an unopened pack of Smoked Salmon dated use before 21st December.
Do I risk it or throw?

midgey Thu 01-Jan-26 17:33:20

Smell it! That’s what I’d do. After all it has been smoked.

nanaK54 Thu 01-Jan-26 17:39:30

Throw it!

Is it use before or best before? As midgey said smell it or eat a little bit, but if your sense of smell /taste isn't too good it's not always a good indication.

Is it ‘use by’ or ‘best before’?

If the former, I would not be too keen. 11 days over is quite a lot.

And I usually say, ‘oh eat it, it’ll be fine’.

But that sounds rather past best, even for me.

hmm

Chucking it out will be preferable to chucking it up.

It’s “use before”…
It has been in the fridge since it was bought, I’ll open and smell and try a little piece. 😱

just eat it i would, but then i take no notice of the dates on things anyway.
many years ago when i was young nothing had a use by date, and most people did not have a fridge so i still use the standard tests used by my mother and grandmother, if it looks alright and smells alright then eat it!

Have to report, even though it smelt ok, it’s gone in the bin, luckily bin collections tomorrow.
I was too scared to try it 🤣 but thanks for all your advice.

Id probably bin it - remembering all too well when my mum brought me a sizeable piece of smoked salmon from Canada in her handbag (plane)
I have never been so ill. T G nobody else had eaten any, I literally spent the night on the bathroom floor

Sorry but that made me laugh out loud, not that you were sick, but the thought of your mum putting it in her handbag, I bet she had to throw that bag away 😂😂

I really wouldn't, it's a week and a half out of date not a day [shock

Madgran77 Thu 01-Jan-26 18:17:20

I'd never risk it with any fish or meat! sSmojed or not!

Tuinoma Thu 01-Jan-26 18:17:41

Smell it, taste a tiny bit...you can always spit it out and if ok I would eat it. I've done just that with smoked salmon I found under my cheesebox in the fridge, roughly the same vintage. Fishy smelling or slimy is not good.

Eat Uncooked fish out of date?

Are you mad?

Casdon Thu 01-Jan-26 19:54:23

Wise decision DollyD. Smoked salmon is cold smoked, but not cooked, so it still has bacteria in it, which multiplies over time. I wouldn’t eat it past the use by date.

crazyH Thu 01-Jan-26 20:05:47

11 days over the ‘use by’ date is well over. Bin it.
The worst food poisoning I’ve ever had, was from a pack of prepared ‘washed and ready to eat salad’ from a very famous store.

AGAA4 Thu 01-Jan-26 20:18:24

Glad you threw it away. Not worth having food poisoning.

N4nna Sun 04-Jan-26 13:44:40

Best before = okay…. Use by = Bin it…. I wouldn’t risk it!!! Is it worth the risk???

JaneJudge Sun 04-Jan-26 13:50:04

I just wouldn't risk it with fish but glad to see it went in the bin anyway

Fallingstar Sun 04-Jan-26 13:51:48

I don’t like to waste food but was absolutely the right idea to throw it away. Any chicken or fish lurking in the fridge that is just past its best gets binned by me, once had Salmonella from eating out of date chicken that looked and smelled fine. Never again. It took months for me to recover.

We had some that was just a couple of days out of date, it was an unopened pack and smelt and tasted fine. My daughter was here and I didn't let her anywhere near the pack showing the date, but if it had tasted odd she would have picked it up.
I usually keep things like this in the coldest part of the fridge, or even freeze them sometimes if they have a shorter date than I really need. Salmon defrosts very quickly.

Jojo1950 Sun 04-Jan-26 14:02:03

Agree throw away!

SusieB50 Sun 04-Jan-26 14:30:30

I reluctantly threw away some missed uncooked sausages yesterday dated 27/12 .
Fortunately we have a food waste collection so didn’t feel quite so guilty. I added a bag of out of date salad to the vegetable soup I made and that was quite tasty !

Janlara Sun 04-Jan-26 14:33:14

I'm glad you threw it, it was way out of date. It's not just the bateriums that are no doubt present but the toxins they have produced too.
Babies can't have smoked salmon until at least one year old, same with honey.
