Chicken thighs - per person?

I don’t often use them, but was looking up traybake recipes earlier - virtually all stating 8 to serve 4 people.

Those I usually buy are pretty big and TBH I’ve usually used one each, obviously with plenty of potatoes/rice/other veg. I’m sure it’d be different if you had hulking great, permanently ravenous teen boys to feed, but is it odd to have just one each?

It’s not a question of economising, BTW, I just feel that one per grown adult is enough.

I always cook 3 for the two of us. When dishing up I split one, so we have 1 and 1/2 each.

The Waitrose ones were really big. I ended up cutting them in half.

I buy them from our farmers market and they’re huge too, and their whole chickens are generally well over 2kg.

I generally cook a pack of four, but we never eat it all and there’s usually enough as the base for a second meal. Like you, I’m trying to cook a bit less, but better quality meat. Because it’s more expensive, we focus on cheaper cuts. (I think our Waitrose do these well on their butchery counter.)

I think if I was cooking for guests, I would cook two large ones each in case people are hungry. DSS and their wives are all tall with good appetites.

One! That’s not enough for me and I’ve had weight loss surgery! 🤗

I always serve one per person. It is more than sufficient.

DGS would think I'd put him on a diet if served him one.
But he is well over 6', as are DS and SIL.

If we were having anyone here for dinner I'd cook more, let people help themselves and if there were any left, they'd be fine the next day for DH and me.

My OH would think he was being starved if he was only served one chicken thigh - my eight-year-old GS would quite happily scoff two!

I buy chicken thighs (among other things) for my2 cats and a small dog. Two thighs are a meal for them all. 100% meat and cheaper than pet food which can be 4% meat.

Really? One chicken thigh?

I really want chicken fricassee now, I use chicken legs and thighs for that and DP likes 3 and I’m ok with two with the proviso they are large.😄

Surely chicken thighs are the one item that are so versatile, and comparatively cheap, that it is better to overcater and have enough to freeze the left overs or make a sandwich.

One per person in our household too. Mostly i buy the boned and skinned ones and chop them up allowing 100gms per person.

Two per person and if any go begging just cut off the meat and mix with a salad or make sandwiches the day after.

Go for 4! 🤭

The ones from the butcher stay the same size so if big then 1 but the supermarket ones shrink so it’s 2

Oo er, missus, that's posh!

😃 It’s easier than most people think to do, with the added bonus that it requires white wine and as Keith Floyd once said ‘ I cook with wine, sometimes I even put it in the food’.
It’s something I make about once a month. It’s lovely with mashed potatoes, rice or roast potatoes or pasta. If I do it with rice then I add peas, and with mashed or any potatoes then broccoli or butter beans.😋

I'll try it; the chicken thighs we bought have gone into the freezer for another time.
Boeuf bourgninon tonight!

Another fave meal for me Allira I’ll be round there for about 7.30🤭

It isn't a question of appetite. It is a question of reducing the amount meat we eat by serving smaller meat portions. There are many ways of eating a substantial and satifying meal while reducing the size of the meat portion

I agree. We're vegan. No animal ingredients, protein comes from other sources, our meals are substantial and satisfying.

We cook meat, eggs, cheeses, milks, creams for our family. They happily eat food prepared for the two of us, some prefer ours.

Just as well I forgot to give you the address. It all got a bit fraught when I decided to make a citrus pudding as well.
(Don't ask!)

Eating 2 is good- latest health advice is to up your protein as you age, as it helps build muscle which we are losing. Probably best to eat more protein & less dessert ! However, Yogurt & fruit with granola/ nuts is again high protein and satisfies a sweet tooth.

You can up your protein without eating more meat. Beans and pulses are also high in protein. You point out that nuts and dairy contain protein, but a manufacturered fruit yoghourt with granola is very high in sugar and the sugar will do more damage than you will benefit from the protein.
