My word - so those ultra‐hygienic greasy fried chicken shops proliferating anywhere and everywhere and infesting town centres may go out of business?

Shame. Not.

They will get round it, otherwise a lot coild lose jobs, probably say they are going healthier and swopping chicken for tofu or the like

I don't want to be a virtue signalling killjoy but as a vegetarian, I would welcome anything that meant fewer chickens were reared in horrible conditions and then killed in ways that are not always humane.

I love a kfc with gravy
Hardly ever have one but…

Oooh I’m with you! KFC chicken with KFC gravy and a corn! A very occasional treat, we have been known to have this and a bottle of 🍾

Good. The less chicken people eat the better. Factory-farmed chickens lead horrible short lives filled with suffering.

Many of us eat free range chickens and eggs

WithNobsOnIt Sat 18-Apr-26 19:58:05

Because it's is probably the cheapest even after being shopped thousands of miles around the world.

That Capitalism for you

Jaxjacky Sat 18-Apr-26 18:26:35

Even the majority of free range chickens are killed using gas, CO2.

Practically everything in our lives depends on fuel, because it needs transporting. So much the worse because so much of our industry has gone abroad. Cement and fertiliser, to mention just two products, also depend on oil. Something for the Net Zero idiots to bear in mind?

What about the poor chickens, I always feel so sorry for them and what life they've lived to be able to sell them in these cheap food outlets.

I was shopping in tesco in Northern Ireland yesterday. I picked up frozen chicken pieces. My husband said check where its from. I couldn't believe it, CHINA. I put it back. We are a country with good farm produce. Why is tesco buying from China?

Not all chicken is factory farmed and I for one am not going to say it's wrong to eat it! It's a bit like free range eggs and caged (if still available). People, like myself, buy them because it is what we can afford.

Also, please don't anyone give me the lecture of how free range eggs taste better because in all honesty, you can't tell the difference! I gave up keeping free range poultry a few years ago due to rising costs and avian flu and the eggs taste no different! The only difference is what pellets they get and if the manufacturer puts in marigolds for the yolk colour. I've been buying white shelled cheap eggs from Tesco and they have been some of the best! Rock hard shells, golden yolks, tight whites, even a week out of date.

This CO2 issue was also mentioned a few years ago when I had lambs ready for the chop as I asked the chap who was going to do them, if he was still able, or would I have to send them to auction, he said there was no issue that abbatoirs knew of. Lambs went to him, we're coming to the end of them.

I also buy a pig all cut up off him yearly! Can't beat belly pork!

Panic buying chicken and pork will make a nice change from panic buying toilet rolls!!!

DH's paper was advising to stock up against shortages - that in itself creates shortages. Shame on them.

Having said that, if I got locked in for a month, I would not go hungry unless the electric went off.

I did read in the news a couple of days ago that the govt was holding a mtg to prepare for food shortages. Several weeks ago I read about the food etc reserves/preparations for emergencies in other countries and how many weeks supplies they held. Many countries had huge reserves but the UK - zero! As usual caught on the back foot again

Apparently CO2 is used in the slaughter of pigs and chickens. Who knew?!

Everyone should know.
If we eat factory food at least we should acknowlwdge the conditions these being are kept and killed under.

Wyllow3, I wonder what you meant: "Watch what you say.."
Why should anyone have to?

I'm a sugar free fizzy drink drinker and I have already noticed a dearth of my usual drinks for sale.

Won’t go down well if there’s no beer for the World Cup!

I can do without the beer and for that matter the World Cup!

And the government has kept open a CO2 production plant that was due for closure for that very reason. Because, unlike the Conservatives closing down our gas storage facilities they are thinking ahead.

Doodledog Fri 17-Apr-26 11:05:53

If there are shortages of anything that individuals use regularly they will be inconvenienced, and nobody's choices are morally superior to anyone else's.

Worst case scenario is that people start panic buying, so shortages are created and people start questioning one another's personal choices.

Don't think Bollinger & Krug use CO2 for their fizz, GG13 so there's hope for you.

I am sure my staff will be ok on procurement 😹

Should go well with rabbit and pheasant.
