I’ve been told to avoid tomatoes because acid reflux is causing me problems. I’ve tried a couple of recipes but am not very impressed. Does anyone have a decent recipe for a notomato sauce? Spaghetti Bolognese is such a useful meal to batch cook and I miss it.

Basil pesto.

Sweet chilli, if nobody else has already suggested it.

Search for nomato not notomato. There's a brilliant one out there on the Heal Me Delicious website, that I actually prefer to a tomato recipe.

I use sweet peppers in brine. They make a lovely bolognese sauce although I do have tomatoes in mine too. I been the peppers to make the sauce.

Thank you ladies for your suggestions. My food has been getting very boring as I have other problems to contend with as well as the acid. Your suggestions will bring a bit more variety and get me out of a rut.

I've been taking Lansoprazole for over 10 years now and it works fine for me thank goodness. Before starting on this medication I was extremely prone to acid reflux. Results of a misspent youth I think ( swigging sherry and port from my parents liquor cabinet).
Omeprazole didn't help at all. It's the only medication I take. Just had my annual meds review with GP as required under NHS guidelines.

I take lansoprozole twice a week. I have my last meal of the day early around 5.30 and it is mostly just fish or chicken with plenty of veg but no potatoes.
Spaghetti bolognese is quite heavy if you have it in the evening.
My mum always had her big meal at lunchtime which sorted her reflux out.
Some diet changes may help you.

Yes, I agree with this. I often get an acid stomach myself but it's fine if I'm upright so a larger lunch and smaller supper is better. I'm on diet pills at the moment, they slow your digestion down and can make it worse.
I used to make a fish lasagne, no tomato but a (not very rich) white sauce with a variety of different fish to ring the changes. If you use a little lower fat cheese in the sauce it shouldn't affect you so much. There are loads of good lower fat cheddars about now.

I have never thought of making a fish lasagne cc, that’s definitely something I’ll try. Totally agree about having the main meal at lunchtime whenever possible.

I originally used a recipe but I'm afraid I can't remember where I found it or exactly what was in the mix, but I'm sure you can find one online, it's very adaptable provided you have enough sauce. It makes a change anyway!
When my children were small I used to make a twirly pasta bake recipe with tuna and courgettes or leeks in white sauce, very adaptable, from one of the Dairy cookbooks.
My husband prefers to have his main meal in the evening, so I compromise by having smaller meals myself for lunch and supper, slightly earlier than his preferred time.

I make carbonara with white sauce to which is added cream, cheese, garlic, bacon and leek.

Can you consume orange juice. Made a lovely recipe years ago of monkfish with a red pepper and orange sauce. Can’t find it now! But it tastes quite tomatoey. Maybe experiment with onions, red peppers, garlic and orange juice?

Basgetti unfortunately all citrus fruits are off the table because they are acidic. I’m finding combining a diet suitable for managing gastric reflux with the low FODMAP diet and keeping it low calorie rather limiting.

My stepdaughters refused to eat tomatoes when they were young. I just served spaghetti with a savoury mince including all the non-tomato elements that I'd include anyway - mince, grated carrot, onion, garlic, lardons, finely chopped mushrooms, herbs, stock... It was - and still is - delicious.

I also have reflux, Gaviscon ADVANCE is a real help, rather than PPI's. They can also cause dementia in people over 70. I have had this verified by two consultants. Have you tried tomatoes. I have and they don't give me reflux.

Could you put a small amount of baking soda in to neutralise the acid in the tomato?
