I’ve been told to avoid tomatoes because acid reflux is causing me problems. I’ve tried a couple of recipes but am not very impressed. Does anyone have a decent recipe for a notomato sauce? Spaghetti Bolognese is such a useful meal to batch cook and I miss it.

Could you mix a small bit of tomato puree with stock and maybe add some chopped aubergine and/or mushrooms?

I can't really think of anything that truly replaces tomatoes in a spag bol.

You could try a white bolognese sauce - culinaryginger.com/traditional-white-bolognese-sauce/

Can’t you get your acid reflux sorted out?

Oreo Mon 27-Jul-26 18:54:37

There’s a magic pill called Omazaprole, have you asked your GP?

How about using red peppers? You could roast them first with olive oil to bring out the flavour, then blitz them to make a purée.
I thinks I’d cook the mince and other ingredients first and then add the purée at the end, so not to spoil it’s flavour.

Yes, as ferry23 suggests, a white Bolognaise sauce with meat, onions, garlic, carrots, celery, white wine and a good stock would be an alternative. Known as Ragu Bianco.
You could add milk or cream according to some recipes. I wouldn't but that is a matter of preference.

I’m not sure any of these would help with acid reflux, you need to cut out more than tomatoes

A green pesto? Basil, olive oil, pine nuts and grated Parmesan with a dash of lemon.
Rocket or one of the spicy ‘Asian greens’ works too. Or spinach with a dash of chilli.

You’re absolutely right Aggie but cutting out tomatoes is the hardest change for me.

Oreo, I did have the reflux pretty much under control but have had to come off Lansoprazole due to side effects There are other meds but my GP doesn’t want to prescribe them until the tests for yet another condition have been carried out. Such is old age!

I will try the white bolognese sauce though definitely without cream.

You can buy acid free tomatoes, if you can source them. Then you can make your own. I once tried the nomato sauce from the Acid Reflux diet. It was actually quite good.

A cheesy sauce perhaps? Or a curry sauce ?

Omazaprol damages your esophagus and should only be used short term I think it causes Barrats syndrome and can lead to cancer .There are other things that can help ,check online

I’ve heard that, too but they don’t tell the public !

It’s the chronic gastric reflux that can lead to Barrett’s Oesophagus with an increased risk, all be it a small one, of cancer.

Completely and utterly wrong! I suggest you read up on the reasons for Barretts.
Omazaprole will help to prevent it.

Oops, I see you have already corrected it.
Hope that your GP comes up with another medication which really helps after your tests are done😃

I take lansoprozole twice a week. I have my last meal of the day early around 5.30 and it is mostly just fish or chicken with plenty of veg but no potatoes.
Spaghetti bolognese is quite heavy if you have it in the evening.
My mum always had her big meal at lunchtime which sorted her reflux out.
Some diet changes may help you.

I have acid reflux and am aware that tomatoes are not good for it, but I am fine if I add plenty of sugar with the tinned tomatoes in spaghetti bolognese.
I only put in a tiny amount of garlic, as that is one of the worst things for me. I always suffer after eating at an Italian restaurant!
I think we all have different triggers for reflux.

There have been several peer reviewed medical papers about Omeprazole affecting kidney function. I refused it as GP suggested I take it for persistent night time tickly cough. Also you shouldn't be on Omeprazole for long periods. Of course my GP said he had never heard of these risks!

SpinDriftCoastal Tue 28-Jul-26 18:26:04

Yes, puree sweet potatoes. I make a lovely bolognese sauce with puree sweet potatoes and use it in lasagne or bolognese.

teabagwoman Tue 28-Jul-26 18:43:00

Thank you Spindrift I have a bag of sweet potato in the freezer.

No not good for the bones apparently!

A few ideas

I like a "English spal bol" made with a gravy based sauce - like you'd use for Shepherds pie.

Pesto

Creamy or cheesy sauces
Carbonara
Macaroni cheese
Cheese & Onion/ham/broccoli etc

Oil based sauces- for example fry chopped bacon, onion, mushrooms and garlic in a little oil and then toss with freshly cooked spaghetti or linguine

My DH hasn’t been able to tolerate tomatoes for over a year now, I’m finding our food is becoming very boring. I use mustard, and Lee and perrins sauce to casseroles and spaghetti bolognaise, I just take my portion out and add the tomato to mine.
Like Cold said above I do meatballs in a gravy sauce too. I made my own pizzas the other day and put a tiny bit of tomato on the base, unfortunately it still upsets him looking now for a substitute.

Famotidine is an alternative to Lanzoprazole or other ppis with fewer side effects. It's not as long-lasting as the -azoles but works quite well for me, along with Rennies for immediate relief. Gaviscon can also be helpful.
It's important to treat the acid as it can cause other problems as mentioned by others, and diet changes may have only limited effect.
