Steak this weekend?

Absolutely not - I've just done my week's shopping for little more than that.

I love an aged rib eye steak but for some reason Waygu puts me off. No idea why. 🤷‍♀️

No not that amount I will buy a ribeye occasionally but only if its on offer.

I know Wagyu is expensive but that is ridiculous!

I eat very little red meat so I can’t remember the last time I had a steak.
Wouldn’t say no if someone else was paying though. 🤣

I noticed aged sirloin in M & S last weekend was £17 for one steak. I bought two aged ribeye ones from my local butcher for £30 so £15 each and probably that’s the most I would pay. Never had waygu don’t really fancy it.

No way Jose! as the saying goes. My only occasional rib eye is if it is in the reduced basket and even then these days I look at the reduced price and think it is the usual price!

No I would not pay that, especially as I know I would be suffering with it stuck in my teeth afterwards, so definitely not worth it to me.

Simply no. There are many other foods I would spend money on but not to that extent. I don't have the teeth for chewing even the tenderest of meats. But I did buy a nice filet steak for MrJolly recently from Aldi. It was really very good.

I'd sooner spend £25 on steak, and £35 on basics for a food bank.
I'm no "do gooder", but I'd enjoy my steak more.

Many years ago my son bought a five stuffed bird from Lidgates for Christmas. It was absolutely delicious.. It would have been rude to ask the price!!!!

On a poorer note, last weekend we had a dry aged sirloin steak from Aldi, which had been loitering in the freezer for a while. It was utterly scrummy. We frequently have their rib-eyes, which are equally good (they have been on special offer recently).

Also, we have one steak between the two of us - ample - which means we can indulge more often!

What exactly is 'Wagyu' beef and why is it so expensive?

Wagyu comes from special cattle, bred by the Japanese originally. It can be produced in the UK but that imported wagyu from Japan is the top notch version and that’s why it’s expensive. It’s high fat so you need a smaller amount. I’ve not had wagyu but we had chateaubriand at a restaurant for a special birthday a couple of years ago. It was also expensive but it was a fabulous meal.

I’m not a huge meat eater so I’d only have something like this once in a blue moon.

No, I love a steak and had one only yesterday, £18 at a local independent eatery near me, beautifully tender and nicely seasoned, came with fries, sides and cooked medium/rare to perfection.

Why would I pay £50+ for something I have to then cook myself.

The advert said it was British and Australian Wagyu beef.
I had thought it all came from Japan.

I love a nice steak but I wouldn't pay those prices. We don't eat much red meat now, partly for health reasons and partly because it's so expensive.

Aldi sell packs of two fillet steaks for £13.49 we've had quite a few and they've been delicious. I certainly wouldn't pay £50/60 for a steak, someone's taking the proverbial, but no doubt, there will be those willing to pay those prices

I was treated to a Michelin * tasting menu a couple of months ago. One of the extra dishes was wagyu steak at £50. When it arrived it was three one inch cubes of meat.
I will say that it was the most amazing steak I have ever eaten and a taste that I will never forget. Worth every penny for the absolute pleasure of trying it.
M&S do a wagyu steak for about £17 which is big enough for two people and is very good. We treat ourselves to “steak Friday “ most weeks. Love it.

It’s the marbling I think that gives it the flavour. I am not sure if they are totally grass fed though.

I haven’t tasted Wagyu beef, but I reckon a piece of British bred organic beef, totally grass fed and humanly killed will give wagyu a run for its very expensive money.
