Hello! ?

By my reckoning, this thread will see us through until we are near to C********!

SachaMac’s question was ‘if you could travel back to any time or place for one day, where / when would it be’?

I’m still mulling it over…

FannyCornforth Fri 30-Sept-22 09:30:41

SachaMac yes, Bennett’s has closed. How sad is that?
In fact, Ashbourne looks a bit sadder than I remember. It’s got good branches of FatFace and Joules though.
The teddy bear shop is open ‘by appointment only’!
I think that Bennett’s in Derby may be reopening again soon.?
My step grandson used to work there until it closed, and he loved it.

Molly I haven’t tried it myself, but I heard it discussed on the radio recently.
Apparently you have to drill a hole in them to let the scent (or whatever) out.
That’s the key!

What’s your favourite thing about Autumn?

MrsKen33 Fri 30-Sept-22 10:32:17

Morning Fanny.
Lighting the log burner. Gets so warm DH goes and puts his shorts on !!!!

Same question please

ginny Fri 30-Sept-22 12:02:30

I like the changing colour of the leaves but otherwise not much. Long dark nights, cold wet weather do not appeal to me.

When was the last time or have you ever made an article of clothing ?

henetha Fri 30-Sept-22 12:05:30

I used to make all my own summer dresses, shift style, when I was younger. The last thing I made was a knitted scarf.

Do you often make lovely, big creamy filled cakes and decorate them? Or little buns or cup cakes?

SachaMac Fri 30-Sept-22 12:37:21

I make a Victoria sponge filled with lemon curd and fresh cream & brownies occasionally but don’t do half as much baking as I used to.

It is a shame about Bennett’s Fanny We always used to love going in to see the. Christmas tree & then have coffee & cake in the cafe. Loved that end of town.

Is there a traditional independent department type store still open in your nearest town.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Fri 30-Sept-22 12:47:53

No, sadly. We used to have a Ford's (Beeston, Notts) which if I recall correctly, sold household goods like kettles, washing-up bowls, mops, and the like downstairs and dress-making fabric and patterns in a small room upstairs which seemed an unusual mix. I think there's a coffee shop in its place though I stand to be corrected.

Same question again please.

AGAA4 Fri 30-Sept-22 16:20:29

No I haven't tried conkers but I use a rhubarb spray in the bath where I always used to find them. They hate strong smells and seems to be working.

Any idea how to keep wasps away? I've had some coming into my kitchen over last few days.

AGAA4 Fri 30-Sept-22 16:24:09

Whoops! No we don't have many small independent shops unfortunately. Where have all the chandlers gone?

Have you had torrential rain today?

HowVeryDareYou Fri 30-Sept-22 17:12:08

It has been pouring with rain here (Nottingham) since about 11am.

do you make plans for the weekends, or just go with the flow?

MrsKen33 Fri 30-Sept-22 20:14:48

No definite plans but we do see DD sometime over the weekend.

Have you ever broken any bones? Touch wood I haven’t. Yet

hollysteers Fri 30-Sept-22 23:17:07

No, touch wood.

Do you enjoy fairground roller coaster rides?

biglouis Sat 01-Oct-22 08:46:05

I used to in my 20s but have not been on one for many years!

Did you learn any skills from your grandmother?

I learned embroidery, crochet, and patchwork. She was also an expert knitter but I never liked following patterns. Some of my happiest memories as a child are of sitting together after afternoon tea on a sunday doing crochet.

SachaMac Sat 01-Oct-22 09:10:13

My Grandma taught me lots of things but the things I remember most are cooking & baking & learning how to clean & polish my shoes properly. She also taught me how to do hospital corners, although I’ve not had much call for them since fitted sheets were invented smile

What did you learn from your Grandad?Mine taught us how to play chess & dominoes amongst other things.

Mollygo Sat 01-Oct-22 12:02:03

Draughts, dominoes, gardening and how to make things out of wood.

I’ve just had a trial offer from WFF of 5 meals and desserts for a greatly reduced price. Have you ever ordered ready to cook meals?

HowVeryDareYou Sat 01-Oct-22 12:25:45

We've used Hello Fresh and Gousto, when they had special offers. The meals were really very good but expensive, and the portions we quite small.

Do you watch much tv? (we watch Netflix more than anything)

crazyH Sat 01-Oct-22 13:55:45

Yes - well, I wouldn’t say ‘watch’ but it’s always in the background - company for a single woman

Beautiful day today - going later for my flu jab. I was hoping to go to see the grandchildren. I shall wait to see if they call.
Do you visit your Grandchildren, on the hop so to speak or do you wait for an invite?

MrsKen33 Sat 01-Oct-22 14:05:23

Mine live too far away to just pop in. 5 hour drive. But they do visit now and again but not as often as we might like.

4 days holiday….. where would you go?

SachaMac Sat 01-Oct-22 17:28:31

If abroad I’d like to go back to Budapest or Istanbul, in the UK, North Norfolk or the Cotswolds.

If you are planning on sitting down in front of the tv with a drink tonight what will it be. I don’t drink alcohol very often but fancy a nice glass of red wine tonight.

Ali08 Sat 01-Oct-22 18:23:15

Drink would be tea or hot chocolate, or gin & lemonade or tonic.
We're watching 'Longmire' so an episode or 4 of that, as, we're very much interested in it.

What suggestions would you give for watching on TV, whichever channel etc, for people asking right now?
(Locke & Key was good).

Mollygo Sat 01-Oct-22 18:53:27

Simon Reeve’s South America. I enjoy the sights and he’s less irritating than Michael Portillo.

Same question please.

crazyH Sat 01-Oct-22 23:21:01

I agree Mollygo but if I have to choose another : Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (I learn so much from that show)

Have you read your Meters and taken photos of the reading ? I have, and sent them to Scottish Power

MrsKen33 Sun 02-Oct-22 06:25:28

No need at the moment as we are on a fixed rate until April. Scottish Power have told us we need not submit any readings
Is your heating gas, electricity or oil ? We are oil with additional wood fire

FannyCornforth Sun 02-Oct-22 06:30:24

Gas. Very old system.
Everything in our house is old, and not in a good way!
The house is a constant source of annoyance for me; but then I feel guilty as we are quite comfortably off and you’re lucky to actually own a home at the moment.
I just wish that I could wave a magic wand and all the improvements that it needs would be done ?

What is a constant source of annoyance for you? Serious or not so serious

MrsKen33 Sun 02-Oct-22 06:38:58

Next door ‘s outside lights. They have five at the front and several more at the sides and back. It is like Son et Lumiere . Whenever the wind blows they all come on, or one, or three, for 10 seconds, for 3 minutes,. We have mentioned it but no response so we keep our blinds down at night now. Everyone comments on the light show.
Same question please

FannyCornforth Sun 02-Oct-22 06:47:44

‘Morning Ken, blimey, that does sound very annoying
