I'm afraid we don't like chutney's so with loads of green tomatoes I put them into darkness to ripen them off.As my children have flown the nest we have a spare room in the loft.I lay a 12x9 decorators dust sheet on the floor and over half of it I spread the green tomatoes I then fold the other half over to cover them and keep them in darkness .most years we have had right up until christmas and they taste much much better than shop ones. Still more to do tomorrow(42 tomatoe plants-will be cutting down next year)

Thanks granto, have tried the banana trick but they ripen too quickly I
need them to ripen over a longer period although they do come fairly quick to start but taper off to a useful amount- we do eat a lot of tomatoes
