Joys of Spring

Tramping up the hill
In the deep dusk
To shut the henhouse for the night,
I saw, even in the dim light,
Light buds on the apple tree
And, with the light of my torch,
A budding fresh greenness
At the ends of the flowering currant.
The bird cherry tree buds
Are swelling with new life
And the gorse looks sturdily leaved,
Ready to flower before too long.
If the bees have survived the winter in the chimney,
(the honey has stopped dripping),
They might come out for that.

Been lovely blue sky and sunshine here today. Was probably cold early on though. (I don't know anything about early morning weather blush)

jeni Tue 06-Mar-12 16:30:42

N Somerset.

wotsamashedupjingl Tue 06-Mar-12 16:00:29

jeni I just looked at your profile to see how close to the North Pole you live (you don't say hmm) and saw your 'favourite threads' bit. That is so sweet. smile

The first celandines are out in my garden. (No, I know they shouldn't be there. But I like 'em. And you try getting rid of the so and so's! grin)

Butternut Tue 06-Mar-12 15:44:45

I remember Chichester Harbour! Lovely area.

Quiltinggran Tue 06-Mar-12 13:46:27

Thanks, bagitha I hope so too. A friend is coming up with me for a first visit to the area and she wants to visit the Geopark north of Ullapool so maybe she'll break the jinx and see it all at its beautiful best!
But this afternoon I'm going to take take advantage of a sunny day in the south and going for a walk down by the sea at Chichester Harbour.

Ariadne Tue 06-Mar-12 10:44:55

Oh Annobel - and "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may..."

bagitha Tue 06-Mar-12 06:14:53

i hope you get some spring weather in Wester Ross, quiltie! It's one of my most favourite parts of the world. For pure beauty, I don't think it can be beaten. smile

Quiltinggran Mon 05-Mar-12 22:46:39

PS supernana I forgot to say I loved the poem.

Quiltinggran Mon 05-Mar-12 22:41:56

Make the most of any lovely calm days, supernana, I shall be up at my cottage in Wester Ross again next week and that's always seems to be a sure guarantee that the good weather will disappear, only to reappear when I leave again!!

Butternut Mon 05-Mar-12 19:40:51

This sounds like a very calm day, super. I see you just resting and looking at this beautiful scene. smile

supernana Mon 05-Mar-12 13:12:53

bagitha butter thanks

A special day
feathered-cloud streaked across
baby-blue sky.
Misty mountains
rising ghost-like
from a still deep sea.
Oystercatchers content
voiceless
waiting upon the
pebbled shore -
ripples washing at their feet.
White gulls
floating on the crystal air...
the ferry
cutting a swathe of white
as it glides towards
the islands
of the inner Hebrides.

Annobel and Ariadne - Daffodils are inspiring, aren't they, after the greys of winter days.

Butternut Mon 05-Mar-12 12:44:46

bagitha That feels like the sort of morning that makes me want to throw my arms open wide and take a deep breath smile.

Annobel Mon 05-Mar-12 09:22:25

Daffodils have always inspired poets. Herrick on the transience of life:

FAIR Daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon....

bagitha Mon 05-Mar-12 08:02:27

My favourite kind of morning:
Forsted ground, bright sunshine,
Clear air and a still loch,
Chickens enjoying life in all its freshness
When, double-jumpered in wool,
I let them out to a beautiful world.

Ariadne Mon 05-Mar-12 06:17:26

And, as I quote all the time:

"Daffodils the come before the swallow dares,
And take the winds of March with beauty."

Sorry for the repetition!

On Saturday, I bought 3 bunches of the palest lemon, frilly tulips, which are on the chest in the hall and, miraculously, have opened up to be exactly the colour of the dado rail. A tiny thing but it really pleases me each time I see them. sunshine

Butternut you have described my morning garden so beautifully - as I went out this morning, lots of narcissi and nerines have started to open up their lovely yellow flowers and it really does feel like spring sunshine

jeni Sun 04-Mar-12 21:12:25

smile Daffs are natures mini sunshine

bagitha Sun 04-Mar-12 20:57:27

Nice to 'see' your daffs in my mind's eye, butty. Ours are not flowering yet – late varieties perhaps, plus we haven't had a lot of sunshine to encourage them. It was lovely today though, if cold.

Butternut Sun 04-Mar-12 20:32:10

The sun failed miserably
To penetrate the groggy mist
Which lay moodily,
Just about the ground
But left space enough
For mini daffs
To showcase their brilliance
Around and below
The trees,
Which disappeared into cloud.
It was a yellow morning,
After all.
