Gardening in West Africa

Hello All,

I am hoping to return home to Ghana but I am worried about 'Mossie' and other bugs that fly around at night in the garden therefore making it unpleasant for me to sit out and night and enjoy the beauty of the stars and the cool evening air.
I am not a gardener and have very little knowledge of plants etc, although i am extremely interested in the prospects of growing all of my veg because these items are very expensive. I am seeking advice from members of the forum on the best plants I should use,if any, that would deter these 'things' and would also be useful to me in my cooking.
When making suggestions please bear in mind these points; most of the year the weather is extremely hot and humid and we also have the rainy season can last for several months and would ,i imagine soak the plants, also my garden is very 'sandy'. I have a hand dug well for water.
