My poor garden - what with me being ill and the rain, it is really out of hand, all grass and hedges sprouting.......help, I need my little gardener man!

Horse tail is having a great summer in my garden so is goose grass (aka sticky willie). The privet hedge at the front door was doing a fine job of deterring callers - the meter reader had to to force his way past it. I eventually found a dry half hour to rush out with the trimmer and slash off the worst of the growth, but it looks terrible. hmm

Looking at my garden and contemplating what IS doing well this year...
Roses very happy, unless they get rained on. They like having their roots nice and damp, like wild roses growing next to ditches.
Half hardy fuchsias are starting to flower and looking fairly enthusiastic - well they do Ok in the west of ireland don't they...
Anything remotely subtropical in origin like begonias, courgettes or tomatoes are almost at a standstill.
Slugs doing brilliantly and do are the water butts.

It's easy to pull up though. You don't have to grab it, it grabs you.
I always called it Sticky Willie as a kid. Ruth Goodman called it cleavers and was using it to strain some kind of infusion through...anyone see that?

Burdock was fun as a kid too.

That sticky weed (aka goose grass) is driving me crazy. It has invaded my garden in force and it's so hard to get rid of. I have too brush the burrs off when I've been down the garden.

Yes everything is growing like crazy - and my poor roses are coming into bloom.

Gales here in Cornwall, sad to find many plants flattened by the wind and heavy showers, despite my best attempts at staking them. Forecast looks better for next week. Weeds are loving this weather, we are over-run with cleavers this year (or Sticky Willie, as Beth Chatto calls it - that green weed with sticky blobs on that we used to throw at each other as children, it stuck to our clothes - this was before ITV!). I threw a few annual seeds around in a moment of madness, now can't tell the weeds from the flowers! This never happened to Alan Titchmarsh! flowers

It's been dark all day here in Cheshire - not good for the spirits!

Hooray! I ordered some sun from my daughter yesterday and it came!
And I've planted out my runner beans!

Rain did go away today and we had a lovely sunny afternoon here in the central south. Managed to get out in the garden - first time for ages - and do some weeding and dead heading. Food for the soul. We've been cooped up indoors for so long - it was good to get out!

We've had a lovely day up here in Scotland - it was really bright and sunny this afternoon so went for a walk around the golf course and then back and sat in a chair with the Saturday Times. After that watched the potatoes growing and can now see my beetroot and carrots coming through.

Been helping a young friend move house yesterday and today. 29C yesterday, we were boiled. And today 13C and chucking it down with rain. Should be getting better tomorrow at last.

Dave the gardener says he's coming - when it dries - but I don't expect him on a w/e and it's going to rain again...........

If I have any energy, sadly lacking on this medication, I will try and do a bit today or tomorrow. But I already fell asleep this morning!

I'm wearing polo neck jumpers in May, my garden is full of Triffids and my neighbour and I are thinking of building an ark.

Oxon70 Wed 09-May-12 21:07:42

Mine's a bit more than lush.....positively on the way to drunken forest...help!

grannyactivist Wed 09-May-12 19:09:48

Thanks for that white, I've been hoping there would be a positive spin-off from all this rain. I must say the greenery is looking particularly lush because of it.

whitewave Wed 09-May-12 19:07:57

My grandfather was one of many Victorian/edwardian gardeners for a very large country estate always said that you can never have too much rain in May - don't know why tho'

grannyactivist Wed 09-May-12 19:01:09

Heavy sea fog hasn't budged all day - and combined with endless rain and drizzle it isn't a good day to be out and about. I checked on the allotment today though and the strawberry plants are in flower like I've never seen before, early buds too on the raspberries and enough salad leaves that I could eat them all day and still not deplete the supply by much. But oh I do long for a little bit of sunshine

kittylester Wed 09-May-12 18:55:24

What I would like to know is why it always pickles down at school collecting time!! confused

susiecb Wed 09-May-12 16:04:47

Annobel Wed 09-May-12 13:32:52

Wow! I've just seen the forecast: high pressure coming in by the end of the week, though the wind will be from the north. So - sunny but cool!

Notsogrand Wed 09-May-12 13:30:05

Raining, cold and windy here. Getting a bit fed up with it to be honest!

Annobel Wed 09-May-12 13:25:23

Morning sun has gone away! sad The rain has started, albeit gently, and I have just got to my washing in time to finish drying indoors.
