We have recently lost our hydrangea petioralis that was growing well against our garage wall for about ten years. Last year it died off for no apparent reason, and we are not sure what to put in it's place. It is a north facing wall and we would like something that will grow fairly fast and perhaps not need too much support. Any suggestions please?

There is a nice bright variegated Ivy called Goldenheart.

Or Winter flowering jasmine?

I agree. V. ivy works well. the hydrangea needs a fair bit of water perhaps. Goldenheart grows quickly and is attractive.

Sorry for butting in this is a thread for me. My newly planted hydrangea looks very sad sad against North facing fence, I will give it a bit longer and maybe try that Ivy. Bought a winter flowering jasmine as my daughters grew like fury. The new rambling rose is well away.
