Yellow birch leaves; first autumn tinting.

Noticed them on the tree outside my bedroom window yesterday when I got back from Derbyshire. Similar timing to last year.

Autumn asters are ready to open too, and the sedums are turning pink - the bees love them. I've got both the green and red leaved ones. Weather is dreadful now- after a heat wave at 35+C, it is now 14 and wind, rain, rain and more rain (:

By all these lovely tokens
September days are here
With summer's best of weather
And autumn's best of cheer.
Anon

I just read that on a garden centre website. Nice isn't it? smile

"September is one of the loveliest months of the year to be out and about in the countryside; there are still warm days to be enjoyed. There is a certain luminous quality about the light at this time of the year too; a soft and warm glow that picks out the reds and oranges of flowers in the garden. With harvest festivals, and a harvest moon, it is a time to be thankful for another good year in the garden."

Lovely. smile

Spot on J - Lovely, lovely September days.

Anon does write a very nice poem smile

granjura Wed 05-Sept-12 17:49:58

Back to big clear skies, sunshine and warmth - wonderful.

JO4 Wed 05-Sept-12 18:01:50

Butternut grin!

Oh my! Now that the cloud that was covering it has been blown off, there's a faint covering of whiteness on the Cobbler! Can't see Beinn Ime or Beinn Narnain as they are still cloud-covered.

I did see that there was snow forecast for Glencoe and Ben Nevis, but they are a bit away.

Thought it was a bit chilly today, though hedging is a warming activity smile

Only on the windward slopes. It's not (shh!) winter snow.

JO4 Tue 11-Sept-12 19:41:56

It's gone blooming cold in our back garden! hmm

JO4 Tue 11-Sept-12 19:42:38

That'll be your fault Bags if you've got snow up there.

Bags Tue 11-Sept-12 21:30:42

Yep, lay the blame fair and square! wink

JO4 Wed 12-Sept-12 09:49:54

grin

I'm convinced it always feels cold down here as soon as they have snow in Scotland. Can the cold air really be felt that far? confused

(Not really blaming you Bags grin)

Bracken browning,
Trees thinning,
So I can see loch through them
As well as over them.
Fewer bat droppings
In the porch,
And an autumn crocus
In flower.
Small things that delight
In the ever-onward march
Of the changing seasons.

Forgot one:

Colder getting up for the loo in the night!

annodomini Wed 12-Sept-12 11:26:04

Another sign of autumn arrived in today's post: an 'invitation' to have a flu jab, which I will, of course, accept.

JO4 Wed 12-Sept-12 11:32:45

Yes. But snugglier getting back in again! smile

baNANA Wed 12-Sept-12 14:33:37

Bags, colder getting up for the loo in the night can be good if you are still having night time sweats!

medic Wed 12-Sept-12 14:44:31

I love my hot water bottle- with a wooly cover it keeps warm until daybreak

gracesmum Wed 12-Sept-12 14:52:28

Very inconvenient - flu jabs at local surgery 6 October - I have much more interesting things to do that day - or 3 November - guess whuch one I'm going for!

Anagram Wed 12-Sept-12 14:56:05

How old do you have to be to have the flu jab? OH has one every year, but I haven't been invited!

JO4 Wed 12-Sept-12 15:19:22

Over 65. I didn't take it up last year and probably won't this year. I think, keeping yourself reasonably fit by keeping to a healthy lifestyle - good diet, reasonable exercise, and sensible precautions about keeping warm is adequate.

baNANA Wed 12-Sept-12 15:46:35

Anagram go to Boots it gets cheaper every year, it's probably only about a tenner now and you can use your points card!

Bags Wed 12-Sept-12 15:48:01

banana (you'll hate me for this! wink), what are night time sweats?

Anagram Wed 12-Sept-12 16:05:21

Thanks baNANA but I think I'm with J04 on this one - and I'm not 65 yet anyway!

harrigran Wed 12-Sept-12 16:12:51

I think Scotland got the back end of Iceland's snowstorm, pleased family were safely home before it started.
