Fairy rings

Fairy rings are caused by fungus under the ground. To try and prevent the spreading of the fairy ring you can carefully cut any of the toadstools off at their base and place them in a container. Once you have collected all the toadstools burn them. Do not put them on the compost heap or redistribute them over the lawn or soil as they contain spores that will further the growth of the fungi. Burning the toadstools will destroy the spores.

You need to buy a fungicide to destroy the fungus underground. Be careful, if I remember correctly, it's very potent and dangerous stuff,

I get them in my lawn occasionally I think they look attractive too.. they don't do any harm. Not sure how you get rid of a fairy ring though.. apart from the fact you shouldn't mow over them , rather pick them out and discard if they aren't edible..

Why ghastly, by the way? I'm imagining a mushroom ring in a lawn, you see, and it looks quite nice in my head.

I've never known it happen before but for some reason (probably the endless rain) our front lawn has had endless crops of small pointed brown toadstools. I find them quite attractive actually.

Sit in the middle at midnight and make wish!

Eat them.
