Not Epimedium - that flowers in spring and the leaves are different. Definitely Houttuynia cordata. Thanks everyone

Yes. That's it. Bishops hat or epimedium or barrenwort. Four or five white petals and a sticky up thing like an erect catkin in the centre.

Indeed it is!! Thanks lucid. Just looked it up. It's also called the Chameleon plant as the leaf colours change over the summer and autumn. Apparently it's quite invasive but good ground cover. brilliant - it can stay

If it is the leaves should smell slightly of citrus when crushed....

Sorry, nothing springs to mind, although the heart shaped leaves look so familiar!

well the leaves look a bit like the violet family?
but the fleshy central spike thing isn't saying violets to me.
