old fashioned flowers

So good to see we all enjoy different things. I am a Gertrude Jekill kind of gardener, semi tamed English curate's garden full of old fashioned perennials. I have to say the only flower I can't stand, apart from the smaller rockery 'wild' ones, are carnations.

Each to their own- and so hope you find some to enjoy

I always do that Stansgran, have some in a pot ready to transplant at the moment, I don't even use rooting powder, just put them around the side of a pot with compost in, if there is a chance of making free plants I always do it

I always take little side shoots from carnations and root them, then they go in a spot I have in the garden. More often than not I'll get quite a few flowering next year.

Buy a bunch from the supermarket in a colour you like and take off side shoots. Split the stem ,dip in rooting powder and plant as many as you can in a largish pot. I do this with carnations from"special"bouquets. It's quite surprising how many take.

Mixed carnations and gypsophilla- my favourite vase of flowers. Gr1jan , keep trying, I got some plants at a Country Gardens cintre.

I love carnations, the scent transports me back to West Camel in the 1960's...
