I love the story of Todmorden in Yorkshire where one woman's initiative of starting a vegetable garden and putting up a sign that said "Food to Share" has led to the entire town being involved. They're now on Kickstarter (another very good idea, where projects are funded by anyone who feels like contributing) and I've supported them so that their book can see the light. Depending on how much you contribute, you get a copy of the book. No money is taken from your account until the target is reached, so as far as I'm concerned, everyone's a winner.
