What to plant in pots

Ah! perhaps that is what did for my heucheras in pots jack44 - left without roots!

I agree re the hostas, some lovely varieties and they flower.

Agapanthus do well in pots too.

I have a feeling I may buy some extra tubs

If planting Heucheras, watch out for vine weevil - they seem to love them. The compost needs regular checks for the nasty little fat grubs that will devour all the roots.

There was an article in one of the Sunday pull outs about Heucheras in pots which got me thinking about it - I'm going to try 3 or 4 in a biggish pot.

I've got the pink splashed one greyduster and a fabulous acid green one. I thought of putting them in with the coppery one! I think they are really good value as they are so varied and seem to like our garden!

I love heucheras. I have a lovely deep burgundy coloured one which looks as if someone has spattered a brush full of bright pink paint across the leaves. It's very unusual. I've never grown them in pots though. Might try it.

Well I agree with that suggestion, too!

Paint them with natural yogurt and they will get a weathered mould look

Hostas do well in pots, and if you get some of the predominantly cream coloured ones, they should look good in green pots. If you're troubled by slugs, a band of copper slug tape around the top of the pot would not look out of place.

Heuchera come with lots different coloured leaves.

Annieb Could you get away with toning down the green pots? You can get spray paint that will work on plastic (you can get it in Wilko)

If you want evergreen plants then I'd agree with kittyl and go for hebes, which come in various colours and are variegated. There's a lovely red one, Hebe Heartbreak. There are also cream/yellow variations, plus they flower and don't get too big.

What sort of green are the pots?

If you want to camouflage the lots then you want things that trail.

What about miniature or patio rose bushes in different colours

Unless you do put bedding plants in that trail or a coloured ivy - they would hide the green of the pot. You could plant something taller in the centre such as a cordyline australis.

Herbs - green, I know, but some flower and they would be useful.
