Bloody Immigrants

I am overrun by those awful Spanish. I hate them, would do anything to rid myself of them.

What am I talking about? bloody Spanish* slugs, horrid great things are eating my garden as I watch.

Slug pellets deter but don't kill them, my hedgehog won't eat them as they taste bitter ( how the hell anyone knows that I fear to ask)

I collect scores every morning and kill them either with a bucket of soapy water (as recommended) or a boot. heading out now with rubber gloves on.

* It does appear that they do not actually originate from Spain.

I feel sick ?

TriciaF Thu 09-Jun-16 14:55:56

The pine ones are said to have arrived from Spain grin

My DD lives in Surrey. She's looking out for them on Beech trees! Has she got the wrong tree?

I think it's oak, jbf

If the oak processionary moth caterpillars/nests are spotted in your area then it's likely that DEFRA will get involved. Last year two young women with binoculars spent a couple of weeks visiting all the gardens in our area (Surrey) to spot the little blighters. Happily we were clear.

Re. the GandTea debacle - I think it was a slug wot done it.

Only just caught up with this thread and cba to read all of it [sorry] so someone may have suggested this:

If British slugs like beer and will happily drink themselves into oblivion in a dish of beer set into the ground, do Spanish slugs like Rioja - or even cheap Spanish plonk? If you put a dish of wine outside would they drink it instead of eating the lettuces and then drown depart to sluggy heaven?

cba was a bit strong, it just makes me feel a bit sick, hate slugs of any nationality hmm

GandTea Fri 10-Jun-16 18:23:51

Bugger the slugs, I'll drink the beer and forget them.

Ana Fri 10-Jun-16 18:26:35

Hope there aren't any lurking at the bottom of the glass, GandTea! shock

GandTea Fri 10-Jun-16 19:15:01

Like tequila

Ana Fri 10-Jun-16 19:19:36

grin

Jalima I can testify that Irish slugs just love Guiness! They die in their hundreds, but die happy singing the slug version of 'Danny Boy' wink

So maybe Spanish slugs would love Rioja.

BTW I'm staying with DD2 in Surrey at the moment. No sign of the blighters so far.

Thought this might amuse most of you... hope the language doesn't get me kicked off GN!

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 10-Jun-16 20:01:36

that's very good! grin

Jalima Fri 10-Jun-16 20:26:47

Is that an evil smile?
(the slug, not any poster in general! grin)

GandTea Fri 10-Jun-16 20:36:37

OK, so I tried beer traps

Jalima Fri 10-Jun-16 21:07:14

or they eat the lettuce first then go on to the beer (or Rioja) grin

annodomini Fri 10-Jun-16 21:21:09

I think I saw my first Spanish slug last night. A long brown thing as opposed to the native black ones. Yuk. I gave it a dose of slug pellets.
