There is a small area in our new garden, directly below our bedroom window which is currently given over to four wood-bordered vegetable beds. As neither of us are fit enough to manage these, we were thinking of turning the space into a patio with a low brick wall round it into which we could put plants like aubretia etc.

Does anyone have ideas or experience of this? - e.g. about what this might be made of...slabs,brick etc.....or about drainage etc.

You could just use bark which is ok to walk on and of course will freely drain.

Why not contact a hard landscape contractor and ask their opinion? The position and aspect might affect the finished product.

We have paving blocked in an attractive pattern, but your project might be more attractive in another material.

I would ask around for recommendations and probably it is a good idea to get three quotes.
They need to make sure that they do not put down the hard surface above the level of the damp course and the brick wall will need gaps (obviously!! grin)

We have a brick driveway at the front but it gets lots of weeds growing between the paviors which need pulling out or treating, it can be a nuisance although it looks very nice when it is done.

There are lots of lovely paving slabs and designs around nowadays, and most garden centres have displays.
