Thanks Anya - my Googling produced this page too, but unfortunately the site doesn't include pictures of typical damage, which would have been helpful to identify which pest is responsible.

I am beginning to think it must be slugs - I'll tell her to get some pellets.

Very depressing Anya I'll probably get them all. Have got azalea gall and something strange on a maple and the roses nearly always have black spot.

It's probably slugs or snails, we are surrounded by gravel, but we get huge slugs in our conservatory. They have had a go at the morning glory.

Has she sprayed it? I've just been given two hydrangeas Annabelle and put one in a pot ,the other is going in the ground. I'll be watching the replies. No spiders yet.

My daughter bought a young hydrangea recently and planted it in her small front garden. She has carefully looked after it, giving it plenty of water on dry days, so she is really disappointed to find it looking sickly with the leaves being eaten by something.
It is surrounded by gravel which I would have thought would deter slugs and snails, but maybe not. We have always noticed, though, that the whole area seems to be infested with small spiders - would they be the culprits? If so does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect the plant?
