We wanted a prickly shrub for a certain spot, to deter animals jumping over. I bought one last year, it was a foot high at the time, quite expensive, but it has hardly grown at all.
Is this normal, or is the soil wrong?
We have another one in another part of the garden which is thriving, but slowly.
I think they're berberis barberry. Bright foliage in autumn.

I think it depends on the variety. I have one with pink foliage and it is only about 2 ft tall after at least 15 years. I just tidy it when straggly. it is rather close to other plants though, and in a shady spot.

We have one (Rose Glow) which is five feet high ( after four years) and another which we put in last year, it has put on a bit of growth, and is meant to be eventually about three to four feet high.Yes, they are all different, so look it up on the Internet.

Thanks for the replies - we've dug it up and replanted in a large pot - see what happens.
Put another Sauge Grahamii in its place.

That looks like a pretty plant, tricia.
