Thanks for all your help. We have one at either end of a south East (ish) facing fence. The previous one has been slow to get going - I suspect there is a little too much shade - but it is making for the light. Wed like them to meet in the middle.
The damage is about 3' from the ground. I've looked for caterpillars but can't see any and I can't see snails (they are everywhere else in the blessed garden) so I think I have to just watch it.
We don't have a dog and I think the cat is too lazy. I imagined that the plant would be virtually fool proof.
And, only one of my three dicentras has put in an appearance. 
How did they know that we had just put in the village Open Garden Forms after threatening to do so for the last five years or so and never quite being brave enough?
