Compost

Our garden isn't huge and several years ago the council were supplying the black heavy duty plastic Dalek type and we've used it ever since. It's amazing how quickly it fills up. It's teeming with worms and we get lots of lovely compost. Not bought a bag of compost since we started making our own.

My plan is to rationalise the bins I have and put them in pairs one at each end of allotment as you say side by side. And the same at home here in the garden. A friend at u3a used to have 14 bins!.

I bought a twin wooden compost bins at least 25 yrs ago. When I bought mine I think it cost about £100.
each bin is about 1cubic mtr. It is in two sections one to fill, the other to mature. It does work very well but is getting rather old and will need replacing.
It produces excellent compost. Mine has slots at the front that allow you to slide out the planks as you dig it out.

If you have a large enough space, such as an allotment, much the best way to make compost is in two wooden enclosures as it is easier to turn one into the other as it rots down. I have had bins and found them a bit hit and miss - also not that easy to access the mature compost at the bottom.
