Thank you for your suggestions. I fell bad that I haven’t followed them being seduced by the plants available at the garden centre. I bought a chocolate vine, can’t remember the official name and a clematis called Amber, the latter has pretty, vibrant green foliage and flowers twice May, June and September. No perfume and only semi- evergreen. I shall bear your suggestions in mind as I have another area of the garden to reclaim.

Winter flowering Jasmine, green all year round, grows quite quickly and mine is in flower now and will still be flowering at Christmas. It has pretty yellow flowers.

We have a pergola with three uprights which we planted with David Austin climbing roses. The two outside roses on the outside posts were very vigorous but one upped and died this year. The middle one has always been a sickly thing. What can I replace those two with as I know I can’t plant roses in the same spot? If possible, something evergreen with scent that needs little TLC. There is clematis
netting around the wooden posts. It is south west facing.
Thanks you.
