Holly

Thinking about it, I have 2 standard varigated hollies that were supposed to self pollinate but we do have wild trees in the vicinity. However this is their 2nd year and no sign of a single blossom let alone a berry. The garden centre had wired some on and I have to say from a distance they did look effective. Hmm. There's a thought....

We have a self seeded one in the garden, it's never had more than the odd few berries. I'm guessing if it was the "wrong sex" it wouldn't have any ?

I sometimes wonder whether cultivated ones do better than wild holly. There is one in a garden near to us that is absolutely groaning with berries, as it was last year. It is a joy to behold. I have noticed a few others dotted about in gardens, also with plenty of berries, but not many in the countryside yet. I always say the same thing to DH about plenty of berries meaning a hard winter. He always gives the same single word answer, but it is not printable!
