Rose problem

Last year I bought a couple of bear root roses and planted them in the same boarder. One bloomed well during the summer while the other did absolutely nothing.
This year the heathy shrub is shooting well but the other is still doing nothing. Should I give up and dig it up or give it another chance in case it decides to grow eventually?

Sounds like one was already on its way out. Can you return it to the supplier?
It probably became too dry.

That's what I suspected. Unfortunately as it's over twelve months ago I bought it I don't think I will be able to take it back.

Is it dead?

If not prune it and give it a liquid feed.

Depends where you bought the roses, a garden centre near us guarantees plant for more than a year. Worth a try.

I agree with merlotgran

Thanks all. I'll give feeding it a try as it doesn't look completely dead.

Should I have pruned my roses by now?

You should have small leaf on it by now if not scrape a stem if it is green it is still alive!

Yes prune your roses lucky lots of info on the rhs site

What whitewave says is good advice. If you do find that there is still a bit of green in the stem, prune hard and dig plenty of bonemeal in around the roots, topping up with a good mulch. If there is still no new growth by end of May then I'm afraid you'll just have to dig it up and throw it away. Don't lose heart, it happens to all gardeners from time to time.
