AD - millionaire types might spruce up a bit. I guess some people think he does all his own gardening too!

Why would anyone wear a new outfit for gardening? He doesn't only present - he demonstrates things like taking cuttings and transplanting seedlings. I've seen him shovelling compost and digging holes for planting shrubs or small trees. What idiot would do that in new clothes?

although I must say that Miriam Margolyes and her too-short dresses come a close-run thing.

I don’t want a clone of any previous presenter. I just want someone who has enough respect for his viewers to not wear clothes that ought to have been consigned to the dustbin. It is a perverse form of vanity on his part. Okay, I understand that he has more fans than detractors like me, so I will now hold my whisht!

But each presenter makes it their own, surely, whilst the programme is on their watch. Geoff Hamilton was lovely, too, and he had his own slant on GW, but due to his sad loss, the mantle had to be passed on. We can’t, surely, expect a clone of Geoff?

Geoff Hamilton was always nicely but casually turned out. MD has no excuse for looking like a tramp on national television.

Greyduster - I am with you there. At the end of the day he is a presenter and it is what he does well. I have come around to him a bit, I do think he should practice what he preaches - he must have a huge carbon footprint. However it is a show at the end of the day and he is well paid so I do think he can afford a new hat AND a jumper!

The article is nine years old. I remember it well because it was before he was offered the chance to film GW at Longmeadow (after his stroke)

Obviously he had to change tactics slightly. Mulching, for instance, is more important than ever now given that our summers are tending to be hotter and drier. Longmeadow is a perfect setting for GW because I'd far rather tune in to admire a beautiful garden that has taken years to establish in the presenter's style than an outdoor studio like that ghastly one they had when Toby Buckland was presenting.

I think what was actually said Monty Don has had enough of ‘traditional horticulture’. “Fighting nature is a losing battle,” he says, “whether you are growing wheat or wisteria.”

I think DH would probably be quite happy to appear on tv in his 'gardening jumper' which has a hole in the front. And a dreadful old hat

Ok, I know I am going to get dumped in from a great height, but I don’t think there is anything admirable about appearing on TV in a jumper with a hole in the sleeve, or any other worn out bits of attire. He was interviewed fairly recently saying he had “had it with mainstream gardening” and here he is drawing presumably a huge salary presenting a programme on mainstream gardening. Cynical? Moi?

merlot, I think that is the jumper which also made an appearance on GW a few weeks ago. I noticed the elbow and frayed cuffs.

A couple of years or so ago Monty appeared on GW wearing a dark blue jumper with a hole at the elbow. It made me think of my mother despairing when Dad would refuse to throw anything away he could wear in the garden.

Mum, on the other hand, was just like Margo Leadbetter in the Good Life - all togged up in posh hat and gloves

His attire always makes me smile, but his style is rather endearing and I love to see how those dogs adore him!. I wouldn't be surprised if mice had nested in the straw hat! I bet his wife has long ago given up trying to persuade him to tidy himself up, as did Mrs Attenborough. I always want to tuck Monty's shirt in.

His programme is a real tonic and I find it calm and gentle. His dress style is just "him", really, and it would be odd to see him all dressed up. Long may it continue. ?
