Robinia Red Robin

Many thanks all. Much appreciated. I've checked in my garden notebook and it's Photinia. Thank goodness my daughter gave me a garden notebook. I am so bad with names.
I'd like to keep it in tight control as I only have a tiny London back garden.

A timely post as the one in our large mixed border has suddenly doubled in size and lovely as the red leaves are I don't want it to take over.Only yesterday I made a mental note to look up when to prune.

a great plant, I would trim after flowering.

Also if it gets a fungus, treat it with rose fungicide as these plants are in the rose family, as is spirea, cotoneaster, alchemilla , sorbus, rubus and prunus.

RHS advice:

If ‘Red Robin’ is grown as a hedge, remove the tips of young shoots to encourage the bright red leafy re-growth. They can be trimmed up to three times a year.

Yes, it's probably photinia

I agree with shysal - definitely not robinia, which is a fast growing tree with invasive roots. As we found to our cost.
Pretty though.

Not until autumn - it is known as Red Robin because the fresh spring growth is red.

Mine seems to be about to produce flowers as well for the first time.

We have lots of these, as does our neighbour and they are looking beautiful. I would give them a reprieve and let them do their lovely thing first.

I would leave it too - if I still had one. DH, in a fit of overenthusiastic pruning ignorance, chopped mine down. I was heartbroken. No room now to grow another ☹️.

Do you mean Photinia? Robinia is something different and doesn't have a Red Robin variety. It would be a shame to trim back the attractive new shoots, best to wait until it gets out of hand.

I would wait, as they are just about to put out their lovely new red leaves.
