How the heck do you tell which way up to put gladioli corms in?

Bargain at the garden centre - £5 a paper bagfull. So of course, I crammed 'em in to the brim. Got to plant the flippin' things now and I already come up against this predicament.

Anyone want what seems to 5000 gladioli corms? Sigh. hmm

Ok! Nobody knows!

I will put them in sideways.

I'm not a gardener but trying to put a logical take on this. Would it matter which way they lay in the ground as surely they will naturally grow towards the surface/light ? Just a guess but happy planting !

Only just spotted your post. Have you done 'em?

I grow mine in pots then plant them out like Sarah Raven

You could always plant a few at a time so they don't all flower at once. Sounds like a lorra lorra fun. grin

Looking at muffinthemoo's link, it would appear I have put them in the wrong way up. I will go and get them out and have a look. because tbh I can't remember which way I put the buggers in

merlot I looked at the Sarah Raven way but it seemed a faff. I am a lazy gardener these days.

Don't even like the things very much. Was a 'bargain. hmm

If people in Australia start complaining about a sudden invasion of “gladdies”, you’ll know they were the wrong way up!?

Gonegirl Mon 25-Mar-19 14:18:23

Feel guilty now. Sarah Raven is always right. Sigh.

Good point Greyduster.

Thank you Nico. dunno about happy planting

t would appear I have put them in the wrong way up.
That was quick!!
5,000 gladioli bulbs planted in 2 hours - is that a record?

All mine came up orange, when I planted different coloured ones they disappeared (or turned orange).
Perhaps I planted them the wrong way up

Alright! Perhaps I exagerrated just a little bit. It was a whole paper bag full though. And I had to do 'em twice. hmm

Apparently they have "scars". Who knew? That actually helped a lot. Some foreign bloke on you tube gave the best answer. hmm

Jalima1108 Mon 25-Mar-19 16:47:55

Didn't they have little hairy bits growing out of the bottom? Like an onion?

Gonegirl Mon 25-Mar-19 16:49:40

They had hairy bits growing out of both ends.
