Which rose for a trellis?

I have a thornless Banksia too and it flowers prolifically but not for long. Here it is under my window and over the front door.

On my deck rail I have rose, Crepuscule, which, in the 4 years since I planted it has never once been without flowers in every season. Mind you, we don't get snow here, just an occasional frost.

This photo was taken on 1st June - first day of Winter.

If you live anywhere near Albrighton in Shropshire you should visit David Austin’s garden. All the roses that he bred are grown there. You can amble about and see each roses’ habit and the smell is unbelievable! Worth travelling to.

You could also add a clematis for extra interest!

Rather a fan of Buff Beauty myself! Love Albertine too, but avoid Rambling Rector and Kiftsgate, rather rampamt!

With a strong scent, good disease resistance and a very pretty shade of medium pink called Strawberry Hill ( after the name of Walpole’s house.)
Do have a look at the site, they are more expensive than garden centres, but much better stock.

Thank you all for your input. Tge trellis us purpose made and very strong. It is in front of the existing fence which us neither and belongs to next door. The honeysuckle we planted there is a but pathetic looking!!

The red rose I was trying to think of was Crimson Glory. It is very fragrant and the flowers have a lovely form.

A lot depends on the strength of the trellis too. Small headed roses will be better if it not very big or strong.

What colour do you fancy? There is so much choice.

I have a number, which are suitable for a trellis. I would advise against ramblers as they tend to grow far bigger than the space you have.

So pink “The generous gardener” healthy shiny leaves and a lovely scent

Yellow I have 2 “pilgrim” again a lovely scent and “teasing Georgia” scented

White I have “Wollerton old Hall” strong fragrance, Claire Austen reasonable fragrance and some others like Alfred Carriere which is really too vigorous for a trellis

Red (my favourite) Etiole de Hollande. An old rose deliciously fragrant, and for a shady spot another very old rose Souvenir du Docteur Jamain - a rich wine colour.

The best thing really is to go to a specialist like David Austen on line. All the information is there. You will drool when you see all those wonderful roses.

A thornless variety such as Zephirine Drouhin will be easier on the skin for pruning. I too would recommend David Austin as their catalogue and service is second to none.

Not all climbers/ ramblers are repeat flowering. Alberti next is lovely but only flowers once.
Monty likes Madame Alfred Carrier, he was pruning one on last weeks GW.

Zepherine Drouhin is a pink thornless variety and is supposed to be reasonably trouble free. Have a look on the David Austin Roses website and ask for their catalogue, it's full of information on all their roses.

I would go for Banksaei Lutea. It is scented and thornless. It grows really quickly but is easy to prune and train.

Make sure that you get a climber, not a rambler, unless you have loads of space. Albertine is an old reliable favourite.

‘Aloha’ is a nice one. I had one on a trellis at the back of the garden. Free flowering, very fragrant. Unfortunately it succumbed to rust, so we had to take it out. We had a lovely red one on a pergola in our last house, but I can’t think what it was called now, I’m afraid. I’ll be interested to know what you choose.
