Pear Tree

When we moved into our new home we inherited a little orchard at the end of the garden. A few old apple trees, a plum and a pear tree. The pear tree looked newly planted as it still had a newish label and it was quite small. The first two summers it did nothing at all. This summer it is bowed down with fruit. There are about 40 pears, small but perfectly formed, on the tree. My question is , do I leave them all to ripen, or remove some?

My next door neighbour had a small but bountiful apple tree in his garden and 3 yrs ago it was literally laden with beautiful apples but it obviously got too heavy and one morning the whole tree had toppled over roots and all. We miss our Autumn apples.
Difficult one to judge though if the branches looked really laden and heavy maybe remove some of the weight.

I would think them out. Pear trees take a long time to produce edible fruit. There is an old saying, "you plant pears for your heirs". If the tree has too many fruits it will be under stress.

Here is a question about the problem
