We haven't been living in our new home for very long and in one of the boarders this dead looking shrub has sprung to life, now I'm not the most patience of souls and just can't wait for it to flower, has anyone got any clues what this shrub could be?

Looking at the leaves, it could be potentilla fruticosa. If it is, it will have either white, yellow or orange flowers. Of course, it might be something else entirely?!

I'm also going to suggest Potentilla but may also be wrong,

Another vote here for it being Potentilla

Definitely potentilla. It will flower all summer long. A light prune needed, now and again to help keep a good shape. Just a tip, keep the ground weeded underneath, the grass will spoil the effect and be difficult to remove if you allow it to get a foothold.

My potentilla looks like dead sticks at the moment.
It usually springs into life later than this time of year.

It could be a different type (or could have died).

Thank you all, very happy about that, just wondered if I should be giving it a light prune/tidy up now or wait a bit longer? smile

Yes prune it now as springy suggests.

Let us know what colour the flowers turn out to be!
