Annuals as cut flowers, and update on gardening jobs!

I've just received my Creeping Phlox plug plants from T&M, a bit earlier than expected.
There are 60 of them in pink, red and white strip, blue, and lilac. All in good nick, so I've just spent the evening potting them up. In a day or two's time I'll put them into the conservatory which has no heat.
Then outside for a short while.
They are on the way to a raised bed, that I hope they will spread and fill.
I've never grown them before, but I am looking forward to the colour and scent in the garden!

Next I will plant some seeds, probably Cosmos, which I also haven't grown before, but I want something reliable for cutting for the house.

Anyone advise annuals for that purpose?

The year is skipping along!

Lovely photos all! I feel so much more relaxed now that we are having some sunshine, gardening charges the batteries.

lisagran gorgeous close up of the fritillaries! You've made a good job of showing off the lovely markings!

It does shysal ...once my head is into one job, another follows automatically, and I've forgotten the world temporarilysmile

Just given the lawn its first cut over the last two days.
The mower seemed as if it was giving up the ghost, but just about finished the job! At least it will look tidied if the weather changes and we cant go outside!

J52 ...splendid anemones, will they stay on that pot permanently?

Namsnanny Mon 23-Mar-20 17:36:16

ww2 ... were the delfiniums in the boarder? In which case I suppose the nematodes were watered close to them?

They do look really healthy and a eye popping blue in your photo! The colour Rothco chased all his life.

I intend to relocate the anemones into the garden beds when they’re over.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Mar-20 19:26:51

Yes they are in the border. I’m going to nemotiode them tomorrow?

Got to rethink the hosta as well. It never works and they always end up like lace. So may put them in pots, but pots make hard work having to water all the time. They are in a tiny little “woodland area” I’ve got some digitalis to replace them.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 23-Mar-20 19:29:02

Those anemones would do well in a woodland setting

J52 Mon 23-Mar-20 20:04:39

That’s exactly where they’re going, but I wanted them nearer the house for the first year si could enjoy them. Cunningly they’re in a plastic pot put inside a more decorative planter.

Well, in trying to keep occupied, I've rather jumped the gun, and planted my Sweet Pea plugs outside.
Just caught the weather forecast, and it's likely going to get colder in the next few days.
Also I may have given the slugs an unexpected feast!

I've put some gravel around the plants and will throw some bubble wrap or the like over them, IF I remember!

I love the end result but I'm really a c**p gardener.....too slapdash! smile

Still, these are testing times, and I just wanted to work outside until I was tired.
I hoped I would sleep better tonight, if only from exhaustion!

I don't want to spend another night tossing and turning.

But I think I've gone overboard now though, I'm aching rather. blush.

PS I should have written WE, not I.
Nothing would get done around here, without DH!

These hyacinths in a pot outside smell amazing!

J52 Wed 25-Mar-20 21:15:06

Namsnanny you could make cloches for tour sweet peas by cutting the bottoms out of plastic bottles and putting them over a few plants at a time.
It would protect them from frost and slugs.

Good idea J52 I'm fishing around the back of the drinks cupboard as we speak!
Thanks for that smile

They look lovely too Lisagran It's nice to see such a pure white for a change.

Cleared an overgrown area which wasn't on the agenda today. I found a few packets of Lilies I bought from B&Q that I bought in their sell off section. I'd forgotten all about them and now some of them have blue mould on. So I've taken the best ones and planted them directly into the garden.
I'm hoping to cut them for the house, if they survive my miss treatment!

Some colour in the early spring garden.

Namsnanny Thu 26-Mar-20 21:50:13

Thanks for posting the photos vegansrock
Muscari are such an intense blue aren't they?
I love your pond!

Planted the remaining lilies and cut up more plastic bottles to cover sweet peas

Lovey photos. Keep them coming. So cheerful.

Just been out into the garden and I’m so excited there are buds on my Auriculars. All from two plants given to me a couple of years ago.

Forgot photo Duh!

Lisagran Sat 28-Mar-20 14:44:25

Amelanchier just starting to flower here smile and a few bluebells at the end of the garden. Also lots of lovely bright blue Chionodoxa

Namsnanny Sat 28-Mar-20 18:22:27

Isn't this blossom just spectacular?

Hope you like it too!

Lisagran Sat 28-Mar-20 18:33:41

Wonderful Namsnanny

Namsnanny Sat 28-Mar-20 19:07:38

Blue bells Lisagran! There quite early aren't they?

Your patience has paid off J52!
I didn't recognise the leaf in your photo so I looked it up. Primulas? The flowers look hand painted. Will they be exactly the same flowers as the parents do you know?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Mar-20 19:22:38

J52 you need a theatre for your auriculas?

Namsnanny Sun 29-Mar-20 00:25:22

A project to keep you occupied in lockdown J52?

J52 Sun 29-Mar-20 12:59:48

The stand they are on is a 3 tiered semi circle. At the moment they’re in a sheltered position when the flowers begin to open I’ll move them so they can be seen from the house.

The flowers should be the same as the parents as they were grown from division of the rootstock. They’re a plum colour with a yellow centre. They do look painted when in full bloom.
In the corner of the photo is a clump in a pot. That’s this years divisions.

My ambition is to grow Angel’s fishing rods but I’m never successful. I live on the South Downs so chalky soil.

Has anyone got a flourishing group in their garden and any advise?
