Holes in lawn

I can't judge the hole diameter, but one year we had wasps burrowing in the lawn.

It might be badgers, although from your photo I'm slightly unsure. We have badgers who dig holes at night, they're looking for tasty grubs. They dug lots in the spring but disappeared in the summer and now they're back. I've assumed it's to do with the approach of autumn. I don't mind at all but some people do.

Possibly voles?

The area you live may give an indication of the holes. Pop some coffee grounds down the holes. Voles, badgers, shrews etc. will move away from the garden. If rats use chili flakes. On the photo there doesn't seem to be any cobwebs so rules out wasps, beetles etc. Good luck.

Squirrels have been burying acorns in my garden the last few weeks but if it’s never happened before seems strange.

Possibly stoats?

Might be woodpeckers, we have them here and it's the sort of thing they do

It's squirrels digging very similar holes in our lawn. Started a few weeks ago - winter is on it's way!

How deep are the holes OP?

Hi. We have had holes in our lawn earlier in the year. They were made by bees and we could see the bees going in and out. Apparently they are miner bees as they make tunnels under the lawn. Ours have now gone off somewhere else. Could be bees but you would see them if so

We have had the same problem but it's foxes in our case, I see them out and about at night from our bedroom window. They have made a proper mess of our lawn digging holes. We think they are after chafer grubs. The cheeky little devils have even started leaving poo at our back door on a regular basis, it isn't cats doing it, they dig a holes in our garden and deposit it there, so considerate aren't they? (not)

Last night on Gardeners World, Monty Don demonstrated how to easily make turf to repair patches of damaged lawn. Maybe it's worth a watch?

We too have holes. Ours are made by a squirrel- or maybe several.

Magpies has been suggested to me. Apparently there's a particular grub they seek out at this time of year.

We had a similar issue and discovered it was crows pecking for chafer grubs. If you dig down a few inches you may find one, they are creamy white and absolutely enormous and I guess a delicious treat for a bird.

Moles/Vowels/Squirrels.
We have holes thanks to squirrels,but they have to live i suppose.

These holes were appearing overnight so not squirrels or birds as they are curled up in bed.
My fox visitors dig holes in my lawn to bury food in and to dig worms up to eat. Not great, especially as it’s a new lawn but I’d rather have my animal visitors than a pristine lawn so I put up with it and fill them in each morning.

Sounds like an interesting variation of creatures!

I have them as well and think that it's an emerging Devil's Coachhorse beetle . I hope the birds gobble them up , they terrify me !

I think it’s chafer grubs being dug up by birds.

Some bumble bees nest in holes in the ground. I was most surprised to see one emerge once from our lawn, and so I looked it up!
