I just watched the Gardeners World 2019 highlights programme, and it was so uplifting, just the jolt I needed to get off the sofa, seeing the sun and the plants, and all those amazing plans and ideas come to life. I love the stories of people’s own gardens. Sad moment remembering Nigel too, he was a beautiful boy.
If you didn’t watch it, please do, it will make you feel better too I’m sure.

Totally agree, I really enjoyed seeing all the lovely gardens and plants from last year.
So uplifting in these trying times. Can’t wait for spring to come again, I’ve already noticed the daffodils poking their shoots up. Feeling inspired to get out and do something this weekend !

Have recorded it to watch later, there are too few gardening programmes on tv now ( a few years ago there were loads!)
I have so many ideas for a new small border in the garden, and can’t wait for Spring to plant it up.

On my walk I spotted catkins and pussy willow, spring can’t be far.....can it?

Lovely post Casdon. ?

Something is poking its head up in my borders already. Not sure what it is, I'm not much of a gardener but I love watching Monty Don and the pooches. flowers

Spring is definitely on the way. Our local news just showed tea plants and camellias flourishing.

I took DGS out for a walk yesterday and we saw bluebell leaves already 3 inches high. But no snowdrops!

lemsip Fri 08-Jan-21 23:44:52

read this yesterday....... there's a picture,

Daily Mail headline yesterday!
You say potato, I say pota-TOE, let's call the Old Bill out! Woman phones police to report a 'human toe' sticking out of a muddy field, only to discover it's a SPUD

Callistemon Sat 09-Jan-21 00:00:31

Well, you can't be too careful!
Have you never peeled a potato and thought 'that looks just like a big toe'? grin

My daffodils are poking through, the snowdrops are on their way and catkins are out in the hedge. The camellia isn't flowering yet.

SueDonim Sat 09-Jan-21 00:09:14

We’ve got inches of snow and ice and it’s currently -8 degrees outside. No spring for us just yet! grin

Reading this thread I've just ahead a lovely memory of last August driving through the country roads and up the lane to my son's house with all the hedgerows rampant and full of blooming honeysuckle.
It won't be long.

Such positive thinking. I love it (and my garden). Thank you all. A peek outside currently contradicts your thinking (Brrrrr.....) but I'm right up with you all in spirit. Onwards......

Yes? I’m watching the lambs tails lengthening and beginning to wiggle in the wind. I have snowdrops peaking through with white buds.

Days definitely lengthening.

Thank you for this thread Casdon. I am a GW fan and enjoyed watching last night, it was an uplifting reminder of what to look forward to in spring. We have a Golden Retriever because of Nigel, I follow Monty Don on Instagram, he is a very good photographer and posts most days with pictures of the garden and his dogs

I did some trimming and tidying yesterday, the sun was out and it was warm here in Devon. Cleaned the feeders for new seed delivery today. A real feeling of spring and better days to come?

It is fun trying to identify 'The First Spring Day' of the new year. The reason I like January is January is the beginning and for me January means looking ahead. February even more so.

From ‘Spring Nature Notes’

The sun lies mild and still on the yard stones.

The clue is a solitary daffodil – the first.

And the whole air struggling in soft excitements
Like a woman hurrying into her silks.
Birds everywhere zipping and unzipping
Changing their minds, in soft excitements,
Warming their voyage and trying their voices.

The trees still spindle bare.

Beyond them, from the warmed blue hills
An exhilaration swirls upward, like a huge fish.
As under the waterfall, in the bustling pool.

Over the whole land
Spring thunders down in brilliant silence.

One crocus and a few snowdrops out.
Several tête-à-tête daffodils well on the way - buds hanging their heads.
The other day I saw 3 big daffodils properly out in someone’s front garden.

Nice thread Casdon and we certainly need cheering up. Our landscaper was due today but has let us down so I was feeling a bit blue then I smashed the cafetier and cut my hand so a good idea to think about spring and gardens. I loved seeing Nigel - he was just like my beloved Toby sadly long gone too.

Peasblossom Thu 04-Feb-21 10:14:04

My fence man is due today BigBertha. I hope I’m luckier than you and he turns up. ?

I had to get up early to move the car off the driveway and a couple of roads over to park it. I was surprised and delighted at how light it was and how fresh the air felt on my little walk back. Spring is on its way!

Casdon Thu 04-Feb-21 11:22:01

Oh dear BigBertha1 not the best start to the day, I hope you have another cafetière so you can still enjoy a coffee this morning. It’s a wet morning here, but I hope this little sign I just took outside my front door cheers you up a bit.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 04-Feb-21 12:39:14

We had snowdrops struggling through last week, although still just buds. Today we'd be lucky to see the edge of the bed where they are as we have inches of snow and it's still falling. Hey ho - one day, maybe!

BigBertha1 Thu 04-Feb-21 14:05:23

I carried on with the good work this afternoon and dropped the scissors point down into my toe - blood all over the freshly washed kitchen floor. Not my day I think I'll sit down now and get a gardening book out.

silverlining48 Thu 04-Feb-21 15:33:37

Look after that toe Bertha.
Our snowdrops have been out since December, still doing well but a few dying back now. Crocus which we never planted decorate the lawn and the daffodils have buds and not far off flowering. We are in the the south east. I will be very happy when lighter nights and spring arrives.

Puzzler61 Thu 04-Feb-21 15:42:50

Daffodils are a way off flowering outdoors here, but these are British and only 95 pence for this bunch from Aldi. So cheery.
