Rose Growing Advice Please

This is Albertine last summer ?

If you buy bare root it’s cheaper but you need to plant it before the spring comes! In a pot and you can plant whenever suits you.
The was a huge Albertine rose in my parents garden, it’s still my favourite, the smell is just amazing.

When we bought our London terraced house I was determined to have a rose around the front door, and also chose Albertine, I loved it. I dug and dug just beside the front door, the ground was very hard and getting harder when I hit something metal ..... gas pipe! Will plant the next rose in a pot!

Thanks midgey. Albertine is beautiful, I love the buds just before they open too. It seems to survive whatever I throw at it!

Mycorrhizal fungi powder around the roots makes a big difference if you plant bare rooted roses, I put a few in December, and they are sprouting now. There’s usually a bigger choice with bare rooted.

Blossoming no advice re roses I’m afraid although my dear Dad loved them and grew many. Just wanted to say please come back to the Argy for Tea, you misunderstood our non response as a rebuff. It wasn’t that, we just weren’t on GN at the time. ?

Bare root can be planted when the plant is dormant usually from November to end of March. If you hurry you may just be able to get a bare root which is much cheaper than a container grown one. However as you want a patio rose then a container grown may be just as well. There are some very good growers with websites such as Peter Beatles or David Austin which you could peruse for colour, fragrance, repeat flowering and suitability for containers.

Just be careful about the size. Given the right conditions roses can grow to a size greater than indicated on the label.

Albertine is a lovely rose. I had one in Suffolk, but not here.

If it’s in a pot on the patio, it doesn’t really matter wether it’s pot grown or bare root because you are going to need to water and feed it frequently in either case. Many “pot grown” roses are only potted just before sale so don’t have an established root system at this time of year
