Hessayon says June to late July in “The Fruit Expert”. RHS says late July or August! I guess now is the safest time Esmay. Happy gardening to you too !

Our old horticulture teacher used to say 'Always prune a prune in June' for the reasons Avalon25 said. Prune being short for prunus i.e. cherry, almond, plum, peach, and apricot.

Just looked in one of my old gardening manuals .
It says-May to August

Happy Gardening !

Okay .
Two schools of thought !
July then !

Cherries and other stone fruit are best pruned June/July rather than when dormant as with other fruit trees. This is because they can suffer blight and disease if pruned any other time.

Oops !
My text wasn't sent .

You can prune those branches off if you want to .
But -
I wouldn't prune it until late July /August.
I didn't write it in my lost text , but the weight of the fruit and the rain might be making them overhang .
I usually support branches with old tights .

After fruition , the flowers /fruit are set for the next year in most plants .

If odd suckers are produced it is because the energy has been redirected .

Thanks, I’ll get it done now!!

It won't hurt to take off the ends of branches but be careful, we pollarded our tree last autumn and it started sending shoots up from the roots under the lawn.

Can I prune my cherry tree now, it has gone a bit wild and is overhanging the pavement and driveway. Don’t want to damage it as it is full of cherries!!
